čím ... tým

The More ... the More

Level 4

Čím ... tým links two changes: čím viac, tým lepšie (the more, the better).

How It Works

Two changes that go together. English uses the ... the; Slovak uses čím in the first half and tým in the second. Both are followed by a comparative (see comparatives): Čím viac čítaš, tým lepšie píšeš.

Comparative adverbs and adjectives. Often these are adverbs: viac, menej, skôr, dlhšie, lepšie, horšie. Many of the most common ones are irregular: dobre → lepšie, zle → horšie, veľa → viac, málo → menej. Adjectives work too: čím starší, tým múdrejší.

Word order. The comparative usually follows čím or tým directly, but a short verb such as je can come between them: Čím je človek starší, tým viac si váži čas. A comma separates the two clauses.

More and more. The phrase čím ďalej, tým + comparative means more and more: Je to čím ďalej, tým ťažšie (It's getting harder and harder). The same idea is expressed by čoraz: Je to čoraz ťažšie.

Examples (6)

  1. Čím skôr, tým lepšie.

    The sooner, the better.

Word by Word: By-what sooner, by-that better.

  2. Čím viac čítaš, tým lepšie píšeš.

The more you read, the better you write.

    Word by Word: By-what more you-read, by-that better you-write.

  3. Čím dlhšie čakáme, tým je to drahšie.

The longer we wait, the more expensive it gets.

Word by Word: By-what longer we-wait, by-that is it more-expensive.

  4. Čím menej spím, tým horšie sa cítim.

The less I sleep, the worse I feel.

Word by Word: By-what less I-sleep, by-that worse myself I-feel.

  5. Čím je človek starší, tým viac si váži čas.

The older you get, the more you value time.

Word by Word: By-what is person older, by-that more himself values time.

  6. Je to čím ďalej, tým ťažšie.

    It's getting harder and harder.

Word by Word: Is it by-what further, by-that harder.

Čím ďalej, tým means more and more.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a plain adverb instead of a comparative.

Čím viac čítaš, tým dobre píšeš.
Čím viac čítaš, tým lepšie píšeš.

Both halves need a comparative. The comparative of dobre is lepšie.

  • Starting both halves with tým, like English the ... the.

Tým viac čítaš, tým lepšie píšeš.
Čím viac čítaš, tým lepšie píšeš.

The first half always starts with čím and the second with tým.
