Irregular Comparatives
Learn these five by heart: lepší (better), horší (worse), väčší (bigger), menší (smaller) and krajší (nicer).
How It Works
- dobrý (good) → lepší (better) → najlepší (best)
- zlý (bad) → horší (worse) → najhorší (worst)
- veľký (big) → väčší (bigger) → najväčší (biggest)
- malý (small) → menší (smaller) → najmenší (smallest)
- pekný (nice, pretty) → krajší (nicer) → najkrajší (nicest)
Dictionaries give krajší as the comparative of pekný, so use krajší, not a form built from pekn-.
These comparatives decline like cudzí: lepší film, lepšia káva, lepšie auto, s lepším plánom (with a better plan).
The matching adverbs are irregular too: dobre → lepšie, zle → horšie, pekne → krajšie. Two more are very common: veľa → viac (more) and málo → menej (less).
A few other adjectives change their stem a little, like blízky → bližší (closer). The comparative of ďaleký is ďalší, which usually means next or another.
