mať + rok / roky / rokov
Saying Your Age
Koľko máš rokov? (How old are you?) Mám dvadsať rokov. 1 → rok, 2 to 4 → roky, 5 and up → rokov.
How It Works
Asking
- Koľko máš rokov? How old are you? (informal)
- Koľko máte rokov? How old are you? (polite or plural)
See Informal ty and Polite vy and How Much and How Many.
Answering
- 1: Náš syn má rok. or Má jeden rok. (He is one.)
- 2, 3, 4: Má tri roky. (He or she is three.)
- 5 and up: Mám dvadsať rokov. (I'm twenty.)
This is the general rule for counting nouns: see Five and More.
Numbers above twenty
Compound numbers written as one word are usually followed by rokov, even when they end in one to four: Mám dvadsaťjeden rokov. Má tridsaťdva rokov. A number written as one word does not change, so only the noun changes, and it takes the genitive plural.
Past and future
Vtedy som mal desať rokov. (I was ten then, said by a man.) Zajtra budem mať tridsať rokov. (I'll be thirty tomorrow.)
Another way
There is also an adjective with byť: Som dvadsaťročný. (I'm twenty years old.) A woman says dvadsaťročná. With the word rok, always use mať.
