Verbs with sa that take the genitive: zbaviť sa (get rid of), dotknúť sa (touch), dožiť sa (live to see), obávať sa (fear), dopustiť sa (commit), vzdať sa (give up).

How It Works

The verbs. Each takes the genitive (plural: genitive plural):

  • zbaviť sa / zbavovať sa (get rid of): zbaviť sa strachu, zbaviť sa starých vecí
  • dotknúť sa / dotýkať sa (touch, also touch on a topic): Nedotýkajte sa obrazov. Dotkol sa aj témy školstva.
  • dožiť sa / dožívať sa (live to see, reach an age): dožiť sa sto rokov, dožiť sa vnúčat
  • obávať sa (fear, be worried about): obávať sa najhoršieho; also with a clause: Obávam sa, že … (I'm afraid that …)
  • dopustiť sa (commit a mistake or crime): dopustiť sa chyby
  • vzdať sa (give up): vzdať sa nároku

The whole phrase changes. Adjectives and pronouns agree in the genitive: zbaviť sa tohto zlozvyku, dožiť sa vysokého veku.

Birthdays. Dožiť sa is the usual way to talk about reaching an age: Babka sa dnes dožíva osemdesiatky. (Grandma turns eighty today.)

Watch out. Zúčastniť sa (take part) looks similar, but the recommended standard pattern is zúčastniť sa na + locative: zúčastniť sa na konferencii. See verbs with na and the locative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the accusative after zbaviť sa.

    Chcem sa zbaviť tento zlozvyk.
    Chcem sa zbaviť tohto zlozvyku.

    Zbaviť sa takes the genitive, so both words change: tento zlozvyk → tohto zlozvyku.

  • Using the accusative after dotknúť sa.

    Nedotýkaj sa horúci sporák!
    Nedotýkaj sa horúceho sporáka!

    Dotýkať sa takes the genitive: horúci sporák → horúceho sporáka.

  • Using the accusative after dožiť sa.

    Dožil sa vysoký vek.
    Dožil sa vysokého veku.

    Dožiť sa takes the genitive: vysoký vek → vysokého veku.
