Hundreds, Thousands and Years

Level 2

Hundreds are sto, dvesto, tristo and so on, thousands are tisíc, dvetisíc, tritisíc, and a million is milión. After v roku a year is read as one number: v roku 1993 is v roku tisíc deväťsto deväťdesiattri.

How It Works

Hundreds. sto (100), dvesto (200), tristo (300), štyristo (400), päťsto (500), šesťsto, sedemsto, osemsto, deväťsto. Two hundred uses dve: dvesto.

Thousands. tisíc (1,000), dvetisíc, tritisíc, štyritisíc, päťtisíc, desaťtisíc, stotisíc. Two thousand is again dvetisíc.

Millions and billions. Milión and miliarda are nouns. They change with the number the same way as rok does when you give your age: jeden milión, dva milióny, päť miliónov; jedna miliarda, dve miliardy, päť miliárd.

The counted noun. After sto, tisíc and their compounds, the noun is in the genitive plural, just as after five and more: sto eur, tristo kilometrov, dvetisíc ľudí. A past-tense verb is neuter singular: Prišlo tisíc ľudí.

Writing numbers as words. A number in its basic form may be written as one word, as in tristopäťdesiat. In long numbers you may separate the thousands, hundreds and tens to make them easier to read: sedemtisíc dvesto osemdesiattri. In figures, Slovak groups thousands with a space and uses a comma for decimals: 2 500, 1,5.

Years. After v roku a year is read as one whole counting number. It is never split into two halves as in English nineteen ninety-three:

  • v roku 1993: v roku tisíc deväťsto deväťdesiattri (also written as one word, tisícdeväťstodeväťdesiattri)
  • v roku 2004: v roku dvetisícštyri
  • v roku 2025: v roku dvetisíc dvadsaťpäť

When a year follows a day and month in a date, it is usually read the same way; formal speech sometimes uses a genitive ordinal instead. Numbers after prepositions change form, which numbers in cases covers.

Examples (6)

  1. Stojí to tristo eur.

    It costs three hundred euros.

Word by Word: Costs it three-hundred euros.

Eur is the genitive plural of euro, used after tristo.

  2. Na koncert prišlo dvetisíc ľudí.

Two thousand people came to the concert.

Word by Word: Onto concert came two-thousand people.

After dvetisíc the noun is genitive plural (ľudí) and the past verb is neuter singular (prišlo).

  3. V Košiciach žije vyše dvestotisíc ľudí.

More than two hundred thousand people live in Košice.

Word by Word: In Košice lives over two-hundred-thousand people.

  4. Ten dom stál dva milióny eur.

That house cost two million euros.

Word by Word: That house cost two millions euros.

Milión is a noun, so after dva it takes the plural milióny.

  5. Slovenská republika vznikla v roku 1993.

The Slovak Republic was founded in 1993.

Word by Word: Slovak republic arose in year 1993.

Read the year as one number: v roku tisíc deväťsto deväťdesiattri.

  6. Narodila som sa v roku 2001.

    I was born in 2001.

Word by Word: I-was-born in year 2001.

    Read: v roku dvetisícjeden.

Common Mistakes

  • Using dva instead of dve in two hundred.

    Mám dvasto eur.
    Mám dvesto eur.

Two hundred is always dvesto, and two thousand is dvetisíc.

  • Putting the noun in the plural nominative after sto or tisíc.

    Stojí to sto eurá.
    Stojí to sto eur.

After sto, tisíc and their compounds the counted noun is genitive plural, as after päť: sto eur, tisíc ľudí.

  • Reading a year in two halves, as in English.

Narodil som sa v roku devätnásť deväťdesiatpäť.
Narodil som sa v roku tisíc deväťsto deväťdesiatpäť.

Slovak reads a year as one whole number: one thousand nine hundred ninety-five.
