v dôsledku / následkom + Genitive
As a Result of
V dôsledku and následkom + genitive mean as a result of: v dôsledku búrky, následkom zranení. With toho, they link two sentences: V dôsledku toho ... (As a result ...).
How It Works
Form. V dôsledku is the locative of dôsledok with v; následkom is the instrumental of následok. Both work like single prepositions with the genitive, just like na základe or v rámci: v dôsledku búrky, následkom sucha, v dôsledku silných dažďov.
Meaning. They present the noun as the cause of what happened, usually something unwanted: power cuts, closures, injuries. Následkom is a little more bookish and very common with injuries and illnesses: zomrel následkom zranení.
Linking sentences. V dôsledku toho and následkom toho mean as a result, therefore, like preto in a formal register.
A form to avoid. Language guides list dôsledkom on its own as incorrect; use v dôsledku or následkom. In everyday Slovak, use pre: pre búrku. Kvôli búrke is common in speech, but the codified dictionary corrects kvôli to pre when it names a cause.
