-teľný

Adjectives in -teľný

Level 5

Adjectives in -teľný mean that something can be done to a thing, much like English -able or -ible: čitateľný (readable), pochopiteľný (understandable), viditeľný (visible), neodpustiteľný (unforgivable).

How It Works

How they are built. Take a verb, drop the infinitive ending -ť and add -teľný. The vowel before the suffix comes from the verb:

  • -iť / -ieť → -iteľný: pochopiť → pochopiteľný (understandable), použiť → použiteľný (usable), vidieť → viditeľný (visible), uveriť → neuveriteľný (unbelievable)
  • -ať → -ateľný: porovnať → porovnateľný (comparable), predvídať → predvídateľný (predictable), obývať → obývateľný (habitable)
  • -núť → -uteľný: zabudnúť → nezabudnuteľný (unforgettable)
  • -ovať → -ovateľný: realizovať → realizovateľný (feasible)

A long vowel in the verb can become short, just as in the noun for the person: čítať → čitateľ, čitateľný. Many of these adjectives are made from perfective verbs, such as pochopiť and odpustiť.

What they mean. The meaning is always passive and about possibility. Text je čitateľný means the text can be read, just like text sa dá prečítať. This is different from the passive participle, which says the action has already happened: prečítaný list is a letter that has been read.

With ne-. The prefix ne- is written together with the adjective and says the action is impossible: nečitateľný (illegible), nepochopiteľný (incomprehensible), neodpustiteľný (unforgivable). Some are mostly used in the negative form, such as nezabudnuteľný and neuveriteľný.

Endings and related words. They decline like pekný: čitateľná kniha, v čitateľnom písme. They can be compared: čitateľnejší, najčitateľnejší. From them come adverbs in -teľne (pochopiteľne, understandably, of course) and nouns in -teľnosť (čitateľnosť, legibility), which belong to the -osť nouns.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the long í of čítať.

    Tvoje písmo je nečítateľné.
    Tvoje písmo je nečitateľné.

The adjective has a short i, like the noun čitateľ (reader): čitateľný, nečitateľný.

  • Using -teľný when you mean that the action is already done.

Úloha je už riešiteľná, môžeme ísť domov.
Úloha je už vyriešená, môžeme ísť domov.

Riešiteľná means the task can be solved. To say it has been solved, use the passive participle vyriešená.

  • Writing ne- as a separate word.

    Jeho správanie je ne pochopiteľné.
    Jeho správanie je nepochopiteľné.

Ne- is part of the adjective and is written together with it: nepochopiteľný, nečitateľný.
