-osť / -stvo
Abstract Nouns in -osť and -stvo
-osť turns an adjective into the name of a quality: múdry → múdrosť (wisdom), rýchly → rýchlosť (speed). -stvo names a state, a relationship or a field: priateľ → priateľstvo (friendship), bohatý → bohatstvo (wealth), dieťa → detstvo (childhood).
How It Works
Nouns in -osť. Most are made from adjectives by replacing the ending -ý / -í with -osť:
- múdry → múdrosť (wisdom), rýchly → rýchlosť (speed), mladý → mladosť (youth)
- možný → možnosť (possibility), zodpovedný → zodpovednosť (responsibility), čitateľný → čitateľnosť (legibility)
A few everyday nouns such as radosť (joy) and starosť (worry) have the same ending. All of them are feminine and follow the kosť pattern: genitive, dative and locative -i (bez možnosti, o zodpovednosti), instrumental -ou (s radosťou), plural možnosti, schopnosti.
Nouns in -stvo. These are made from nouns and adjectives and name several kinds of abstract ideas:
- a state or relationship: priateľstvo (friendship), manželstvo (marriage), detstvo (childhood)
- a quality: bohatstvo (wealth), hrdinstvo (heroism)
- a field or trade: poľnohospodárstvo (agriculture), rybárstvo (fishing)
- a territory or a group: kráľovstvo (kingdom), ľudstvo (humankind), učiteľstvo (the teaching profession)
After -ník the suffix appears as -níctvo: vlastník → vlastníctvo (ownership). All -stvo nouns are neuter and follow the mesto pattern: v detstve, o priateľstve, s bohatstvom.
Why it helps. These suffixes appear constantly in newspapers and formal writing, next to verbal nouns. When you see the suffix, you know the gender, so adjectives and past-tense verbs agree correctly: veľká radosť, naše priateľstvo bolo.
