Combining Particles in Order
Learn combinations as structured phrases, not as a pile of local endings.
How It Works
Several Jobs at the End
In a sequence such as already one lah, already concerns the event or state, one presents the assertion with a characteristic or assured force, and lah adds a conversational stance.
Order Is Part of the Pattern
Established sequences include one before lah. You cannot freely reverse that order while expecting the same construction and meaning.
Keep Combinations Sparse
A clause may end after the main words, with one final element, or with a familiar combination. More particles do not automatically make a sentence better or more local. Tone and the conversation still shape the force of an acceptable combination.
Examples (3)
- He always bring his own cup one lah.
He always brings his own cup; that is what he does.
Habitual one comes before lah in a reassuring assertion.
- I told you already lah.
I have already told you.
Already marks the completed telling; lah adds the speaker's stance, which may be firm or impatient.
- She checked already one lah.
She has checked it, I assure you.
In this context, one strengthens the assurance and follows already; lah is the outer conversational ending.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Recognize sentence-final one as its own layer before adding a later stance particle in a conventional order. Recognize lah as a stance particle before interpreting its position after another final element.
