тек / само / једино

Limits and Unexpected Smallness

Level 5Sounds Like tek; samo; ǰedino

само marks neutral exclusivity (only X) or conversational downtoning (just).
једино indicates categorical uniqueness or the sole exception (the only one / solely).
тек operates along a scale of time or quantity, encoding counter-expectation (not until, only just, or merely / barely).

How It Works

To build confidence with nuanced Serbian expression, you must separate simple limitation from scalar evaluation.

1. Само (Downward Quantitative Limitation & Pragmatic Downtoning)
• Evaluates quantity downward, marking an amount as small, limited, or 'no more than X': само један дан ('only one day') or кошта само десет динара ('it costs only ten dinars').
• Functions as an illocutionary softener or hedger: Само питам ('I'm just asking') or Само полако ('Take it easy').

2. Једино (Categorical Exception)
• A stronger exclusive selector than само. It highlights that no other candidate fulfills the predicate.
• Frequently introduces conditional exceptions: једино ако ('only if') or једино што ('the only thing is that').
• Cannot function as a conversational attenuator or softener (#Једино питам is pragmatically inappropriate for 'I'm just asking', though syntactically licensed if meaning 'My sole action is asking').

3. Тек (Scalar Progression & Counter-Expectation)
• Delayed Temporal Boundary ('Not until'): When attached to a point in time, it implies the event was expected earlier: Дошао је тек у поноћ ('He didn't arrive until midnight'). Note that Serbian does not use literal calques for 'it wasn't until...'; тек is the authentic choice.
• Temporal Recency ('Just now'): Paired with actions completed an instant ago: Тек је стигао ('He has only just arrived').
• Unexpected Smallness ('Merely / Barely on a Scale'): Unlike само (which limits total quantity), тек marks an early stage along a cumulative continuum or timeline where progression continues: Има тек двадесет година ('He is barely twenty years old' — highlighting that he has only reached this early point in life). Contrast this with Има само двадесет година, which limits the number downward without framing it as an ongoing temporal stage.

Examples (5)

  1. Воз је стигао тек у поноћ.

The train didn't arrive until midnight.

Word by Word: Train aux arrived not-until at midnight.

Тек indicates a delayed boundary contrary to expectations (it was expected earlier than midnight).

  2. Иако руководи целом фирмом, има тек двадесет пет година.

Even though he runs the entire company, he is merely twenty-five years old.

Word by Word: Even-though he-manages whole company, he-has barely twenty five years.

Тек modifies a numeral to evaluate it as unexpectedly small or modest on a cumulative age scale.

  3. Сви су отишли кући, једино је Марко остао у канцеларији.

Everyone went home; Marko was the sole person who stayed in the office.

Word by Word: All aux gone home, solely aux Marko stayed in office.

Једино sets up a categorical, unique exception within a group.

  4. Не брините, само сам желео да поставим једно питање.

Don't worry, I just wanted to ask one question.

Word by Word: Not worry, just aux wanted to ask one question.

Само serves as a polite downtoner/softener here. Једино cannot be used in this attenuating sense.

  5. Тек сам јуче то сазнао.

It wasn't until yesterday that I found that out.

Word by Word: Not-until aux yesterday that found-out.

Serbian expresses English 'it wasn't until...' concisely using тек with a past tense clause.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'само' instead of 'тек' to express 'not until' with delayed time.

Чекао сам те и ти си дошао само у девет.
Чекао сам те и ти си дошао тек у девет.

'Само у девет' means 'exclusively at nine (and at no other time)', whereas 'тек у девет' correctly expresses that the arrival was delayed later than expected ('not until nine').

  • Applying 'тек' to non-scalar entities to mean 'only'.

Тек Петар је положио тежак испит.
Само Петар је положио тежак испит.

Тек requires an ordered scale (time, numerals, or sequence). To pick out an individual exclusively, use 'само' or 'једино'.

  • Calquing English 'it wasn't until... that' literally into Serbian.

Није било до јуче да сам схватио проблем.
    Тек сам јуче схватио проблем.

Serbian does not use cleft sentences with 'до' for temporal delay; place 'тек' directly before the temporal element.
