Level 3Sounds Like pridevi na -ski; -čki; -ški

Adjectives ending in -ски (-ski), -чки (-čki), and -шки (-ški) describe origin, category, or broad affiliation (e.g., 'city transit', 'Serbian cheese'). They are written in lowercase even when derived from countries or cities, exist primarily in the definite aspect, and are typically non-gradable unless used in an extended qualitative sense.

How It Works

Relational adjectives (односни придеви) derived with -ски, -чки, and -шки are one of the most productive adjective classes in Serbian. They define categorical origin, provenance, or institutional association.

1. Choosing the Suffix Variant and Sound Changes:

  • -ски (-ski): The default suffix used after most consonants (e.g., град → градски, школа → школски). Note that feminine nouns ending in -а drop this inflectional ending, attaching the suffix directly to the consonant base (e.g., жен-а → женски). Stems ending in voiced consonants devoice before -s- in writing and speech (e.g., Срб- + -ски → српски). Proper nouns ending in a vowel whose declensional oblique stem incorporates -ј- retain that stem consonant (e.g., Токио, gen. Токија → токијски), whereas stems that already end in the consonant /j/ simply add the suffix directly (e.g., Уругвај → уругвајски). Important orthographic exceptions: The voiced dental consonant -д- is preserved in spelling before -с- (e.g., град → градски, суд → судски, брод → бродски, људски), even though it regularly assimilates phonetically in pronunciation to [t] ([ˈɡratski]). Similarly, dental -т- is strictly retained in spelling before -ски without cluster loss (e.g., брат → братски, Хрват → хрватски, спорт → спортски; never *брацки). Consonant clusters simplify with stems ending in -s or -z (e.g., Рус → руски; Париз → париски). After stems ending in affricates like -ћ, the suffix -ски sheds its initial -с-, leaving -ки (e.g., младић + -ски → младићки).
  • -чки (-čki): Derived through distinct phonological processes depending on the final stem consonant:
    • Stems ending in the velar consonant -к palatalize to -ч- (e.g., радник → раднички).
    • Stems ending in the dental affricate -ц change to -ч- alongside cluster reduction of -ц + -ски to -чки (e.g., Немац → немачки). Stems in -ица follow this exact pattern after dropping the feminine ending -а (e.g., Суботиц-а → суботички, Лозниц-а → лознички, кукавиц-а → кукавички).
    • Stems that already end in the postalveolar affricate -ч simply drop suffix-initial -с- without altering the stem consonant (e.g., Беч + -ски → бечки).
  • -шки (-ški): Used after the velar consonants -г and -х, as well as postalveolar fricatives -ш and -ж. For instance, Праг → прашки; Чех → чешки; Ниш → нишки; муж → muški (мушки).

2. Definite Form and Gradability:
Unlike purely descriptive adjectives, which alternate between short (indefinite) and long (definite) forms, adjectives in -ски / -чки / -шки belong strictly to the definite adjective aspect. The masculine nominative singular always ends in -и (e.g., градски, never *градск). When used in a strictly classifying or relational sense (e.g., српски сир, градски превоз), they denote categories and do not form a comparative or superlative. However, when an adjective of this class acquires a qualitative meaning denoting human traits or manners, it can regularly form comparatives with -ији (e.g., људски → људскији, другарски → другарскији).

3. Adverbial Usage:
Forms ending in -ски, -чки, and -шки also function as default manner adverbs without any extra suffix. This pattern is standard when describing languages or manner of action (e.g., Говорим српски = 'I speak Serbian'; поступити људски = 'to act humanely').

4. Capitalization Rules:
Unlike in English, adjectives derived from proper geographical or national names are written with a lowercase initial letter (e.g., српски језик, београдске улице). They only take a capital letter when they appear at the start of a sentence or form the first word of an official multi-word proper noun (e.g., Београдски универзитет).

5. Category vs. Personal Possession:
Do not confuse relational adjectives with possessive adjectives ending in -ов/-ев/-ин. Use -ски for a generic role or field (e.g., професорски посао = 'professorial work / teaching profession') and -ов for an individual's item (e.g., професорова торба = 'the professor's bag').

Common Mistakes

  • Capitalizing adjectives of nationality or origin mid-sentence.

Учим Српски језик и волим Италијанску храну.
Учим српски језик и волим италијанску храну.

In Serbian orthography, adjectives in -ски, -чки, and -шки derived from proper names are written in lowercase, unlike English 'Serbian' or 'Italian'.

  • Dropping the final -и to create an indefinite short form in predicates.

    Овај нови систем је економск.
    Овај нови систем је економски.

Relational adjectives in -ски/-чки/-шки possess only the definite aspect; their masculine nominative singular must always end in -и.

  • Using -ски where -ов/-ев/-ин names one person's own item.

Different MeaningУзео сам професорску оловку са стола.
Узео сам професорову оловку са стола.

'Професорска оловка' is a correct phrase, but it describes a pencil of the professor kind, in general. To say the pencil belongs to one particular professor, use 'професорова оловка'. The suffix -ски is for a category ('професорски позив' = the teaching profession).
