An Event Before a Past Event

Level 5Sounds Like pluskvamperfekat

The pluperfect (плусквамперфекат) denotes an action that occurred before another past event. In modern Serbian, it also carries a crucial pragmatic nuance: an action whose result has since been undone or is no longer valid.

How It Works

1. Core Functions & Nuance
While traditionally called давно прошло време ('distant past tense') in grammar textbooks, the pluperfect does not merely express ancient events. Instead, it serves two specific functions:

  • Relative Anteriority: Highlighting that an event finished before another past moment (e.g., Када смо стигли, воз је већ био отишао).
  • Cancelled Result / Discontinued State: In everyday spoken Serbian, this is its most common usage. It indicates an action that happened in the past, but whose outcome was later reversed or resolved. Saying Био сам заборавио кључеве ('I had forgotten my keys') strongly implies that you later remembered or found them. If you still don't have them, you would use the ordinary past tense: Заборавио сам кључеве.

2. Morphological Agreement
In the modern variant (бити у перфекту + lexical L-participle), both participles must agree in gender and number with the subject:

  • Masculine singular: Он је био дошао / Био сам дошао
  • Feminine singular: Она је била дошла / Била сам дошла
  • Neuter singular: Дете је било заспало
  • Masculine plural: Они су били отишли
  • Feminine plural: Оне су биле отишле

3. Clitic Placement and Word Order
The auxiliary clitic (сам, си, је...) obeys standard second-position rules. It can split the two participles (Био сам видео) or follow an explicit subject pronoun (Ја сам био видео). In literary Variant B, the imperfect forms (беше, беху...) are fully stressed words and can appear clause-initially (Беше дошао).

Examples (4)

  1. Када смо стигли на станицу, воз је већ био отишао.

When we arrived at the station, the train had already left.

Word by Word: When are-we arrived at station, train is already been left.

Shows anteriority: the train's departure was completed prior to our arrival in the past.

  2. Био сам изгубио документа, али сам их срећом јуче пронашао.

I had lost my documents, but luckily I found them yesterday.

Word by Word: Been am lost documents, but am them luckily yesterday found.

Illustrates the cancelled result nuance: the document loss was a temporary past state that was subsequently reversed.

  3. Ми смо већ биле вечерале када су они дошли.

We had already eaten dinner when they arrived.

Word by Word: We are already been(f.pl) dined(f.pl) when are they arrived.

Demonstrates feminine plural agreement for both participles: 'биле вечерале'.

  4. Урадила је све баш онако како беше испланирала.

She did everything exactly as she had planned.

Word by Word: Done is everything just that-way how was planned.

Features the literary variant (беше + L-participle), providing background context in written narrative.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to make both participles agree in gender with the subject.

Ја сам био завршила факултет пре пет година.
Ја сам била завршила факултет пре пет година.

When a female speaker uses the compound pluperfect, both the auxiliary participle (била) and the lexical participle (завршила) must be in the feminine singular form.

  • The pluperfect is correct, but it says he had slept earlier, not that he was asleep.

Different MeaningКада сам ушао у собу, он је био спавао.
Када сам ушао у собу, он је спавао.

'Он је био спавао' puts the sleeping before you came in ('he had slept'). To say he was asleep at the moment you entered, use the ordinary perfect: 'Он је спавао'. The pluperfect is also kept for clear cases of one past event before another.

  • Combining the imperfect auxiliary with the auxiliary participle.

Он беше био дошао пре нас.
    Он беше дошао пре нас.

In standard Serbian, Variant B combines the imperfect of бити (беше) directly with the main participle (дошао), without inserting an extra 'био'.

Learn This First

To learn the pluperfect, learners need to know how the regular past tense (perfekat) and past active participles are formed, as the pluperfect is built compoundly using 'biti' and a past participle, as well as verbal aspect to correctly position actions relative to other past events.
