Adjectives That Do Not Decline
Unlike canonical Serbian adjectives, indeclinable adjectives (непроменљиви придеви) keep the exact same form regardless of whether the noun is masculine, feminine, neuter, singular, plural, nominative, or in an oblique case. Most of these words are borrowed color terms like розе (pink), браон (brown), тегет (navy blue), or evaluative words like фер (fair) and кул (cool).
How It Works
In Serbian grammar, adjective agreement is the bedrock rule: adjectives decline through seven cases in both numbers and three genders. However, a specific group of words resists native declensional suffixes entirely. These are known as непроменљиви придеви (indeclinable adjectives). They are almost exclusively loanwords, with the word налик standing as the singular established native Slavic exception.
1. Major Semantic Categories:
- Colors and shades: розе (pink), браон (brown), тегет (navy blue), бордо (burgundy), беж (beige), каки (khaki), лила (lilac), окер (ochre).
- Evaluative qualities (modern borrowings): фер (fair), кул (cool), шик (chic), фенси (fancy), супер (great/super), топ (top-tier).
- Resemblance: налик (similar to, resembling; the sole native Slavic indeclinable adjective, used predicatively or post-nominally with either the bare dative or на + accusative, e.g., налик оцу or налик на оца).
- Older conversational loans: тазе (fresh).
2. Register and Native Equivalents:
While indeclinable loan adjectives are completely natural and standard in neutral and everyday speech, formal and literary registers often prefer inflected native counterparts: for instance, ружичаст instead of розе, смеђ or кестењаст instead of браон, and тамноплав instead of тегет.
3. Syntactic Placement and Orthography:
- Attributive position: Borrowed indeclinable adjectives stand directly before the noun: фер потез (a fair move), беж капут (a beige coat). Note that налик is syntactically restricted and cannot be used prenominally as an ordinary attribute (e.g., *налик човек is ungrammatical; instead, it appears post-nominally: човек налик оцу / човек налик на оца).
- Predicative position: Placed after the copula verb бити: Ова одлука је фер (This decision is fair), Он је налик оцу / Он је налик на оца (He resembles his father).
- Spelling: Written as separate words without hyphens (write розе мајица, never *розе-мајица). Hyphens are only applied when combining two colors into a compound shade, such as плаво-беж.
4. Comparison and Modification:
Because they lack standard inflection stems, they do not take regular synthetic comparative suffixes (for example, *браонији is ungrammatical). To express degree, standard Serbian uses analytic constructions (више фер) or derives inflected secondary forms (браонкаст → браонкастији).
Examples (4)
- Купила је розе кошуљу и шета у браон ципелама.
She bought a pink shirt and walks in brown shoes.
Word by Word: Bought she-has pink shirt and walks in brown shoes.
Notice that 'кошуљу' is feminine accusative singular and 'ципелама' is feminine locative plural, yet 'розе' and 'браон' remain completely uninflected.
- Његов нови сако је тегет, а панталоне су беж.
His new blazer is navy blue, and the trousers are beige.
Word by Word: His new blazer is navy-blue, and trousers are beige.
Here, 'тегет' and 'беж' serve as predicative adjectives after the copula without taking gender or number markers.
- То уопште није била фер одлука према нама.
That was not a fair decision toward us at all.
Word by Word: That at-all not was fair decision toward us.
The borrowed evaluative adjective 'фер' modifies the feminine noun 'одлука' in the nominative singular without adapting any feminine ending.
- Он увек носи кул наочаре и бордо џемпер.
He always wears cool glasses and a burgundy sweater.
Word by Word: He always wears cool glasses and burgundy sweater.
'Кул' modifies the plural accusative noun 'наочаре', while 'бордо' modifies the masculine singular accusative 'џемпер', both keeping their base loan forms.
Common Mistakes
Adding native gender or case endings to indeclinable color loans.
Она носи розу сукњу и браоно одело.Она носи розе сукњу и браон одело.Learners often assume that every adjective modifying a feminine noun in the accusative must end in '-у' (розу) or a neuter noun in '-о' (браоно). Standard Serbian requires 'розе' and 'браон' to remain invariant.
Hyphenating indeclinable adjectives to their head nouns.
Купио сам тегет-јакну за зиму.Купио сам тегет јакну за зиму.Indeclinable adjectives are distinct, independent words. Do not join them to the noun with a hyphen.

Indeclinable adjectives are an exception to the fundamental rule of adjective agreement; knowing how standard adjectives match nouns across forms is necessary to recognize why indeclinable modifiers are special.
