Present Tense in a Past Narrative
Историјски презент (historical or narrative present) uses regular present-tense verb forms to narrate completed past events. It transports the listener directly into the middle of the action, making personal stories, historical accounts, and jokes feel immediate, vivid, and dynamic.
How It Works
Function and Dramatic Effect
The primary function of the historical present is живописност (vividness) and suspense. Rather than viewing the event from a detached past perspective through the ordinary past tense, the narrator brings the event right before the audience's eyes.
Syntactic & Discourse Anchors
Because present verb morphology is used, sentences are usually anchored by:
• Past temporal markers: јуче (yesterday), пре неки дан (the other day), 1914. године (in the year 1914).
• Narrative transition markers: кад (when), кад оно (and just then), одједном (suddenly), тек (all of a sudden).
The Aspect Rule in Narrative Present
Beginner learners are often taught that perfective present forms only appear in subordinate clauses (such as after да or ако). The historical present is the most prominent exception to this rule:
- Imperfective present sets the stage: Идем кући... ('I am walking home...')
- Perfective present advances the plot: ...уђем, упалим светло и видим чудан пакет. ('...I enter, turn on the light, and see a strange package.')
Register and Context
This pattern is productive and standard across all speech registers in modern Serbian:
• In conversational speech, it is the standard vehicle for recounting jokes, arguments, and lively personal anecdotes.
• In literature and journalism, it is widely used for biographical timelines, documentary recaps, and dramatic narrative prose.
Examples (4)
- Идем ја јуче преко трга, кад одједном приђе ми један човек и пита за правац.
I was walking across the square yesterday, when suddenly a man approaches me and asks for directions.
Word by Word: Walk I yesterday across square, when suddenly approaches to-me one man and asks for direction.
Demonstrates the classic narrative shift: imperfective 'идем' sets the scene, while perfective 'приђе' creates the sudden punctual interruption.
- Вратим се синоћ кући, узмем кључеве и видим да су врата већ откључана.
I got home last night, took the keys, and saw that the door was already unlocked.
Word by Word: Return self last-night home, take keys and see that are door already unlocked.
All three verbs ('вратим се', 'узмем', 'видим') are perfective presents, presenting a rapid chain of completed actions.
- Године 1927. Аљехин побеђује Капабланку и постаје светски првак у шаху.
In the year 1927, Alekhine defeats Capablanca and becomes the world chess champion.
Word by Word: Of-year 1927 Alekhine defeats Capablanca and becomes world champion in chess.
Illustrates the chronicle or biographical use in written prose, anchoring past history with dramatic presence.
- Седнемо ми тако пре неки дан на кафу, кад ето ти њега са новим аутомобилом.
So the other day we sit down for coffee, and lo and behold, there he is with a new car.
Word by Word: Sit-down we so before some day onto coffee, when behold to-you him with new car.
A typical conversational anecdote featuring the perfective present 'седнемо' anchored by the past time expression 'пре неки дан'.
Common Mistakes
Using independent perfective present verbs to describe real-time, ongoing actions.
Сад узмем књигу и читам.Сад узимам књигу и читам.Perfective verbs in independent present forms are licensed in past storytelling (historical present) or habitual sequences, but NEVER for ongoing actions happening at the actual moment of speech ('сад'). For ongoing present actions, only imperfective verbs ('узимам') can be used.
Using the present tense in an academic text instead of the perfect.
Different MeaningУ овом раду аутор анализира податке и долази до закључка да...У овом раду аутор је анализирао податке и дошао до закључка да..."У овом раду аутор анализира податке" is correct and standard in academic writing; the present describes what the text does. The perfect "је анализирао" narrates the author's past work.
