хоћу / желим

Full Forms of Want

Level 2Sounds Like hteti: hoću; želeti: želim

Both хтети (хоћу) and желети (желим) translate as 'to want'. Use хоћу for direct intention, determination, or answering offers ('I will / I want'). Use желим for wishes, aspirational desires, or polite expressions ('I wish / I would like').

How It Works

In Serbian, expressing desire relies on two distinct verbs that carry different communicative nuances:

1. Хтети (презент: хоћу, хоћеш, хоће, хоћемо, хоћете, хоће)
• Denotes direct volition, willingness, intent, and determination ('I want').
• Caution with politeness: Using Хоћу... to order food or drinks sounds overly blunt and demanding in service contexts, much like saying 'I want a coffee' instead of polite requests like 'I would like...'.
• Dialogue token: It is the standard affirmative answer to an invitation or offer (e.g., Хоћеш ли сок? — Хоћу, хвала!). Saying Желим! in this context is unidiomatic.
• Negation: The negative forms merge into a single word: нећу, нећеш, неће, нећемо, нећете, неће.

2. Желети (презент: желим, желиш, жели, желимо, желите, желе)
• Etymologically tied to жеља ('wish, longing'). It expresses a gentler wish or personal aspiration.
• Common in polite social formulas, such as wishing someone well (Желим ти све најбоље!).
• Follows standard verbal negation as two separate words: не желим.

3. Full Forms vs. Future Auxiliary Clitics
In addition to acting as a full lexical verb ('to want'), these stressed full forms (хоћу, хоћеш...) also serve as the stressed future auxiliary in questions with ли (e.g., Хоћеш ли доћи?) and under contrastive focus. In ordinary neutral future statements, Serbian instead uses the unstressed clitics ћу, ћеш, ће.... Note that clitics cannot stand sentence-initially, cannot carry stress, and cannot take direct noun objects (e.g., Ћу кафу is ungrammatical; you must say Хоћу кафу).

Examples (5)

  1. Хоћу да научим српски језик.

I want to learn the Serbian language.

Word by Word: I-want that I-learn Serbian language.

Uses 'хоћу' to indicate firm personal intention and resolution, followed by 'да + презент'.

  2. Желим чашу хладне воде, молим вас.

I would like a glass of cold water, please.

Word by Word: I-wish glass of-cold water, please you.

Uses 'желим' with an accusative direct object to express a polite request.

  3. — Хоћеш ли кафу? — Хоћу, хвала!

    — Do you want coffee? — Yes, please / I do, thanks!

    Word by Word: — Want-you [question-marker] coffee? — I-want, thanks!

Demonstrates an everyday conversational offer and the natural reactive token 'Хоћу!'.

  4. Ми не желимо проблеме.

    We do not want problems.

Word by Word: We not wish problems.

Demonstrates regular separated negation ('не желимо') with the verb 'желети'.

  5. Нећу данас да излазим из куће.

I don't want to leave the house today.

Word by Word: Not-I-want today that I-exit from house.

Demonstrates the fused negative verb 'нећу' expressing refusal or lack of will.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the future clitic 'ћу' instead of the full verb 'хоћу' to express desire

    Ћу кафу, молим вас.
    Хоћу кафу, молим вас.

The short forms (ћу, ћеш...) are strictly grammatical auxiliaries for Future I and cannot stand alone or take noun direct objects. You must use the full form 'хоћу' (or preferably a polite formula).

  • Writing the negation of 'хтети' as two words

    Не ћу то да радим.
    Нећу то да радим.

In Serbian orthography, the negation of 'хтети' is fused into one word: 'нећу', 'нећеш', 'неће', unlike regular verbs like 'не желим'.

  • Regularizing the 1st person singular of 'хтети' to end in '-м'

    Ја хоћем сок.
    Ја хоћу сок.

'Хтети' has an irregular present stem. The 1st person singular ends uniquely in '-у' ('хоћу'), not the standard '-м'.
