хладно / топло / жао + Dative
Feelings with the Dative
In Serbian, physical sensations like feeling cold (хладно) or warm (топло) and feelings like regret or pity (жао) are expressed impersonally. Instead of saying 'I am cold', Serbian says 'To me it is cold' using a dative pronoun: Хладно ми је.
How It Works
1. Impersonal Structure and Experiencers
In English, we say 'I am cold' or 'I am hot', using the subject pronoun 'I'. In Serbian, using a nominative subject adjective like Ја сам хладан means 'I am cold-hearted / aloof' or physically cold to the touch. To express an internal, involuntary bodily sensation or psychological state, Serbian uses an impersonal construction with an experiencer in the dative case:
- ми (to me), ти (to you), му (to him), јој (to her), нам (to us), вам (to you pl./polite), им (to them).
2. Strict Clitic Placement
Serbian clitic pronouns obey rigid second-position rules. Crucially, the dative pronominal clitic always comes before the 3rd-person copula је:
- Хладно + ми [Dat] + је [Copula] (Correct)
- *Хладно је ми (Incorrect)
If you want to emphasize or contrast the experiencer, use the stressed dative form at the beginning: Мени је хладно, а њему није ('I feel cold, but he doesn't').
3. Tenses and Negation
Because the clause is impersonal, the auxiliary/copula remains in the 3rd person singular across all tenses:
- Present: Хладно ми је. / Negative: Није ми хладно.
- Past: Било ми је хладно. / Negative: Није ми било хладно.
- Future: Биће ми хладно. / Negative: Неће ми бити хладно.
Notice that in the negative present, the negative copula није replaces је and starts the clitic chain.
4. Special Usage: жао ми је
Жао ми је literally expresses sorrow, regret, or pity ('I regret / I feel sorry'):
- Clausal complement: Use што to state what you regret: Жао ми је што касним ('I am sorry that I am late').
- With an entity pitied: The person or thing pitied takes the genitive case: Жао ми је Марка ('I feel sorry for Marko').
- Not for stepping on toes: Do not use жао ми је to say 'Excuse me' when bumping into someone in a bus—use извините or опростите instead.

Common Mistakes
Using a nominative subject pronoun and adjective to express feeling hot or cold.
Ја сам топло данас.Топло ми је данас.Saying 'Ја сам хладан' means you have an aloof, cold personality or are cold to the touch. Bodily sensation requires the impersonal dative construction: 'Топло/хладно ми је'.
Inverting the clitic order by placing the copula 'је' before the dative clitic.
Хладно је ми.Хладно ми је.In Serbian clitic clusters, dative object clitics must always precede the 3rd-person singular auxiliary/copula 'је'.
Leaving the person in the nominative after 'жао ми је'.
Жао ми је Марко.Жао ми је Марка.'Жао ми је' takes the genitive for the person you feel sorry for: 'жао ми је Марка'. 'Жао ми је за Марка' is also correct, so both are fine, but not the nominative 'Марко'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To express personal feelings or physical states impersonally (e.g., 'Хладно ми је', 'Жао ми је'), you need the present tense of 'бити' ('је'), the short dative pronoun representing the experiencer ('ми', 'ти', etc.), and an understanding of how clitics are placed within the clause.
