-ся (взаимное действие)
Reciprocal Reflexive Action
Use the reflexive suffix -ся/-сь to show that an action is mutual (reciprocal), like 'meeting each other' or 'hugging each other'.
How It Works
The reciprocal reflexive action is a specific use of the Russian reflexive system. It typically turns a verb that acts on someone or something else into a mutual interaction between subjects. Note that while many reciprocal verbs are formed from non-reflexive verbs, some only exist in the reflexive form (e.g., здороваться - to greet each other, соревноваться - to compete).
1. Formation and Spelling:
The postfix is attached after the verb's conjugation ending:
- -ся follows a consonant, ь, or й: встреча-ют-ся (they meet), познакомь-ся (get acquainted).
- -сь follows a vowel: встреча-ли-сь (they met). Note: Participles are an exception and always take -ся even after a vowel (e.g., встречающиеся).
Spelling Rule: Pay close attention to the difference between -тся (used in 3rd person conjugations without a soft sign, e.g., они встречаются - they meet) and -ться (used in the infinitive with a soft sign, e.g., встречаться - to meet).
2. Usage Conditions:
Because the action is mutual, you need at least two participants. This is expressed in three ways:
- Plural Subject: Мы обнялись (We hugged each other).
- Мы с + Instrumental: Мы с Анной встретились (Anna and I met). This construction takes a plural verb.
- Singular Subject + с + Instrumental: Иван поздоровался с Анной (Ivan greeted Anna). The verb conjugates to match the singular subject.
3. The 'Passive Trap' and 'друг друга':
Reciprocal -ся verbs are a fixed list. If you invent a reciprocal verb by adding -ся to a transitive verb like понимать (to understand), you create a passive verb (пониматься = to be understood), not a reciprocal one. If you are unsure, use the active verb with друг друга (e.g., Они понимают друг друга).
For emphasis or disambiguation, reciprocal-reflexive verbs frequently take the phrase друг с другом (e.g., Они встречаются друг с другом).
Examples (4)
- Мы давно не виделись.
We haven't seen each other in a long time.
Word by Word: We long-time not saw-selves.
The verb 'видеть' (to see) becomes reciprocal 'видеться' (to see each other).
- Друзья крепко обнялись.
The friends hugged each other tightly.
Word by Word: Friends tightly hugged-selves.
The suffix -сь is used here because the past tense plural verb ends in a vowel (и).
- Они часто переписываются.
They often correspond with each other.
Word by Word: They often write-selves.
This implies a mutual exchange of letters or messages.
- Антон вчера встретился с Анной.
Anton met with Anna yesterday.
Word by Word: Anton yesterday met-self with Anna.
Even with a singular subject (Anton), the action is reciprocal because of the 'с + Instrumental' construction.
Common Mistakes
Falling into the 'Passive Trap' by adding -ся to any transitive verb.
Они понимаются.Они понимают друг друга.Reciprocal -ся verbs are a fixed list. Adding -ся to a verb like 'понимать' creates a passive meaning ('they are understood'), not a reciprocal one. If you are unsure if a reciprocal verb exists, use the active verb with 'друг друга'.
Using the reflexive form with a singular subject without 'с'.
Я вчера встретился.Я вчера встретился с другом.A reciprocal action requires a partner. If the subject is singular, you must specify the partner using 'с' + Instrumental case.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand reciprocal reflexive actions, you must first be comfortable with plural subjects and their corresponding present-tense verb conjugations, as these actions inherently involve multiple participants acting upon one another.
