Animate plural accusative
Russian distinguishes between living beings (animate) and non-living things (inanimate) when they are direct objects in the plural. For animate plurals, the Accusative case looks exactly like the Genitive. For inanimate plurals, it looks like the Nominative.
How It Works
Grammatical animacy is a core feature of Russian syntax. While it usually follows biological life, it is a grammatical category with specific rules. In the plural, this rule applies to all genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and affects the entire noun phrase, including adjectives and pronouns.
- Animate Nouns: People and animals. When they are the direct object of a verb, you must use the genitive plural endings (e.g., -ов/-ев, -ей, or zero ending).
- Inanimate Nouns: Objects, plants, and abstract concepts. These remain in their nominative plural form (e.g., -ы/-и, -а/-я) when used as direct objects.
Important Nuances:
1. Adjectives: Adjectives must agree with the noun's animacy. For example, новых студентов (animate) vs. новые столы (inanimate).
2. Deceased Beings: Russian makes a distinction between words for the deceased. The words мертвецы (dead men) and покойники (the deceased) are grammatically animate, while трупы (corpses) is inanimate.
3. Compound Numerals: When using compound numerals ending in 2, 3, or 4 (like 22, 33, 44), the inanimate pattern (Accusative = Nominative) is typically used even for animate nouns (e.g., я вижу двадцать две кошки).
4. Exceptions: Some non-living things are grammatically animate, such as куклы (dolls), роботы (robots), and тузы (aces). Conversely, plants and collective groups like народ (people/nation) or толпа (crowd) are grammatically inanimate.
Examples (5)
- Я вижу своих старых друзей.
I see my old friends.
Word by Word: I see my old friends [Genitive Plural].
Since 'friends' are animate, the direct object takes the genitive plural form (Acc = Gen).
- Она очень любит маленьких кошек.
She loves little cats very much.
Word by Word: She very loves little cats [Genitive Plural].
Animals are always animate in Russian, so 'cats' uses the genitive plural ending.
- Мы читаем интересные книги.
We are reading interesting books.
Word by Word: We read interesting books [Nominative Plural].
Books are inanimate, so the direct object remains identical to the nominative plural (Acc = Nom).
- Дети рисуют красивые цветы.
The children are drawing beautiful flowers.
Word by Word: Children draw beautiful flowers [Nominative Plural].
Even though plants are biologically alive, they are grammatically inanimate in Russian.
- Врач осматривает пациентов.
The doctor is examining the patients.
Word by Word: Doctor examines patients [Genitive Plural].
Patients are people (animate), so the plural direct object uses the genitive form.
Common Mistakes
Using the nominative form for animate feminine plural nouns.
Я знаю эти женщины.Я знаю этих женщин.In the singular, feminine nouns have a unique accusative ending (-у/-ю). However, in the plural, they MUST follow the animacy rule (Acc = Gen).
Treating collective nouns (groups) as animate.
Мы любим наши народов.Мы любим наши народы.Collective nouns like 'народ' (people/nation) or 'группа' (group) are grammatically inanimate, even if they consist of people.
Forgetting to change the adjective for animate objects.
Я встретил новые студенты.Я встретил новых студентов.Adjectives must also switch to the genitive plural form when describing an animate direct object.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the animate plural accusative, you first need to understand the general role of the accusative case for direct objects. You must also be able to form the nominative plural (for inanimate objects) and the genitive plural (for animate objects), as the plural accusative relies on these two existing paradigms depending on animacy.
