Indeclinable noun

Level 1Sounds Like neizmenâemoe suŝestvitelʹnoe

Indeclinable nouns (несклоняемые существительные) are 'frozen' words that keep the same form in all six cases and both singular and plural. They are mostly borrowed foreign words ending in vowels like -о, -е, -и, -у, -ю.

How It Works

In Russian, most nouns change their endings to indicate grammatical relationships. However, a specific group of words remains unchanged. These are called indeclinable nouns.

1. How to identify them:
Most indeclinable nouns are borrowed from other languages and end in vowels that don't fit standard Russian declension patterns:

  • -о: пальто, кино, метро, радио
  • -е: кафе, тире, шоссе
  • -и: такси, жюри, хобби
  • -у / -ю: кенгуру, меню, интервью
  • stressed -а / -я: бра, амплуа, буржуа

2. Gender and Agreement:
Even though the noun doesn't change, it still has a grammatical gender. You can see this through adjective agreement:

  • Inanimate objects are usually neuter (новое такси). Кофе is traditionally masculine, but the neuter gender is now officially accepted in informal speech. Some exceptions take the gender of their Russian equivalent: авеню (feminine, like улица) and салями (feminine, like колбаса). The word пенальти can be both masculine (like удар) and neuter. The word евро is normatively masculine, but the neuter gender is also widely accepted and officially recognized.
  • Animals are usually masculine (серый кенгуру), but they follow natural gender if the sex is known (маленькая кенгуру if it's a female). Exceptions include цеце (feminine, like муха) and иваси (feminine, like сельдь).
  • People follow their natural gender (известная леди, богатый рантье). Note that female titles ending in consonants (мадам, мисс, фройляйн) are also indeclinable.

3. Other Categories:

  • Acronyms: Initialisms (США, БГУ) are indeclinable. Their gender usually matches the main word (БГУ is masculine because университет is masculine). However, if the acronym represents a plural noun, like США (Штаты), it requires plural agreement. Note that acronyms ending in a consonant that are pronounced as words (e.g., вуз, МХАТ) often decline.
  • Geographic Names of Foreign Origin: Cities, countries, rivers, lakes, islands, and mountains ending in -о, -е, -и, -у, -ю, or stressed -а/-я are indeclinable: Токио, Сочи, Перу, Онтарио. Their gender is determined by the generic noun they represent (e.g., Токио is masculine because город is masculine; Перу is feminine because страна is feminine; Онтарио is neuter because озеро is neuter).
  • Names and Surnames: Foreign surnames ending in vowels other than unstressed -а/-я (Гюго, Верди) are indeclinable. Note that foreign surnames ending in an unstressed -а after a consonant DO decline (like Кафка), whereas those ending in -а preceded by a vowel (Моруа, Гарсиа) or French surnames with a stressed final -а (Дюма, Золя) are indeclinable. Women's first names and surnames ending in a consonant (Кармен, Элизабет, Беккер, Ковальчук) do not change, unlike men's names which do decline. Ukrainian surnames ending in -ко (Шевченко) and Russian surnames ending in -их/-ых (Черных) or -аго/-ово (Живаго) are also indeclinable.
  • Indeclinable Plurals: Some borrowed words only exist in the plural form and do not decline, such as жалюзи (blinds) and бигуди (hair rollers).

Examples (6)

  1. Я еду на метро.

    I am going by metro.

Word by Word: I go on metro.

Even though 'метро' follows the preposition 'на' (Prepositional case), its form does not change.

  2. У меня нет тёплого пальто.

    I don't have a warm coat.

Word by Word: At me no warm coat.

In the Genitive case, 'пальто' remains unchanged. The adjective 'тёплого' shows the case and neuter gender.

  3. Мы сидим в уютном кафе.

We are sitting in a cozy café.

Word by Word: We sit in cozy café.

The word 'кафе' stays the same in the Prepositional case.

  4. Он вызвал такси.

    He called a taxi.

Word by Word: He called taxi.

Here 'такси' is the direct object (Accusative), but the form is identical to the Nominative.

  5. Я пью чёрный кофе.

    I am drinking black coffee.

Word by Word: I drink black coffee.

Notice the masculine adjective 'чёрный' agreeing with the masculine indeclinable noun 'кофе'.

  6. Токио — очень большой город.

Tokyo is a very big city.

Word by Word: Tokyo — very big city.

Foreign place names ending in vowels like 'Токио' are indeclinable. Its gender is masculine because the generic word 'город' (city) is masculine.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to decline indeclinable nouns like regular nouns.

    Я еду в метре.
    Я еду в метро.

Learners often try to add '-е' or '-а' to words like 'метро' or 'пальто' because they look like neuter nouns. These words must remain 'frozen'.

  • Assuming all borrowed words are indeclinable.

    У меня нет паспорт.
    У меня нет паспорта.

Borrowed words ending in consonants (like паспорт, студент, компьютер) decline normally like masculine nouns.

Learn This First

To understand indeclinable nouns, a learner must first be familiar with the standard system of noun genders and the nominative case. This provides the necessary contrast to recognize that these specific borrowed words remain static regardless of their grammatical role in a sentence.
