не + Gerund
Negative Gerunds
Negative gerunds (не + деепричастие) describe a secondary action that did not happen while the main action was occurring. They function like adverbs, answering 'how?' or 'why?' something happened.
How It Works
Negative gerunds are formed by adding the particle не to a imperfective gerund or a perfective gerund.
1. Orthography (Spelling Rules):
- Separate: In 95% of cases, не is written separately (e.g., не зная, не сказав).
- Together: Written as one word if the verb doesn't exist without не (e.g., ненавидя - hating, негодуя - resenting) or with the prefix недо- meaning 'insufficiently' (e.g., недосолив - having under-salted).
2. Logical Functions:
- Manner: Describes how the main action is done (e.g., 'He left without saying goodbye').
- Causal: Explains the reason (e.g., 'Not knowing the way, I got lost').
- Concessive: Expresses 'despite' (e.g., 'Not having finished school, he became a CEO').
3. Usage and Register:
While common in literature, casual speech often replaces these with потому что (because) or хотя (although) clauses. However, some fixed expressions like не глядя (without looking) and не спеша (leisurely) are very common in daily life.
Examples (5)
- Не зная правил игры, трудно победить.
Not knowing the rules of the game, it is difficult to win.
Word by Word: Not knowing rules [of] game, difficult to win.
Here, 'не зная' provides the reason why it is difficult to win.
- Он ушёл, не попрощавшись с нами.
He left without saying goodbye to us.
Word by Word: He left, not having-said-goodbye with us.
This uses a perfective reflexive gerund to show a completed secondary action that failed to happen.
- Недоумевая, почему дверь открыта, она вошла в комнату.
Puzzled as to why the door was open, she entered the room.
Word by Word: Puzzled, why door open, she entered into room.
'Недоумевая' is written together because the verb 'доумевать' does not exist in modern Russian.
- Он отвечал на вопросы, не глядя на собеседника.
He answered the questions without looking at his interlocutor.
Word by Word: He answered on questions, not looking on interlocutor.
'Не глядя' describes the manner in which he answered.
- Несмотря на дождь, мы пошли гулять.
Despite the rain, we went for a walk.
Word by Word: Despite on rain, we went to-walk.
'Несмотря на' is a fixed preposition meaning 'despite' and is always written together, unlike the literal gerund 'не смотря' (not looking).
Common Mistakes
Writing 'не' together with standard gerunds.
Он сидел недвигаясь.Он сидел не двигаясь.Unlike adjectives, gerunds almost always keep 'не' separate unless the verb itself requires the prefix.
The 'Dangling Participle' error (subject mismatch).
Не зная языка, мне было трудно.Не зная языка, я испытывал трудности.The subject of the gerund must be the same as the subject of the main verb. In the incorrect version, 'мне' is not the grammatical subject.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand negative gerunds, a learner must first be familiar with the general rule of verb negation using the particle 'не'. Additionally, they must already know how to form and use both imperfective and perfective gerunds, as the negative pattern simply applies the negation particle to these existing verbal forms.
