мне холодно / жаль
Dative Experiencer with Predicatives
In Russian, physical and emotional states are often expressed without a subject. Instead, the person feeling the state is in the Dative case, and the state itself is a 'predicative' word (often ending in -о).
How It Works
This pattern is used for physical sensations, psychological states, and evaluations.
1. The Experiencer: The person feeling the state must be in the Dative case (мне, тебе, ему, Анне).
2. The Predicative: These words (also called Category of State) function as the main verb of the sentence. Most end in -о (холодно, скучно, грустно), but some are unique forms like жаль (pity/regret) or пора (it's time).
3. Tense Markers:
- Present: No verb is used (Мне холодно).
- Past: Use the neuter singular form было regardless of the person's gender (Мне было холодно, Ей было холодно).
- Future: Use the neuter singular form будет (Нам будет скучно).
4. The word 'Жаль': This expresses regret or pity. If you regret a specific thing, use the Accusative for concrete/animate things (Мне жаль сестру) or the Genitive for abstract concepts (Ему жаль времени).
Examples (5)
- Мне холодно, закрой, пожалуйста, окно.
I am cold; please close the window.
Word by Word: To-me cold, close, please, window.
A classic example of a physical sensation. 'Мне' is the Dative of 'я'.
- Ей было очень жаль потраченного времени.
She was very sorry about the wasted time.
Word by Word: To-her was very pity of-wasted time.
Note the use of 'было' (neuter) even though the experiencer is female ('ей'). 'Времени' is in the Genitive case.
- Нам здесь скучно, мы хотим уйти.
We are bored here; we want to leave.
Word by Word: To-us here boringly, we want to-leave.
Expresses a psychological state. 'Нам' is the Dative of 'мы'.
- Тебе не страшно?
Aren't you scared?
Word by Word: To-you not scary?
A question about an emotional state using the Dative 'тебе'.
- Ивану было грустно вчера.
Ivan was sad yesterday.
Word by Word: To-Ivan was sadly yesterday.
Even with a masculine name like Ivan, the past tense verb remains the neuter 'было'.
Common Mistakes
Using the Nominative case for the person.
Я холодно.Мне холодно.In Russian, 'Я холодно' is ungrammatical. You must use the Dative 'Мне' because you are the experiencer, not the state itself.
Matching the past tense verb gender to the person.
Мне была грустно.Мне было грустно.Impersonal constructions always use the neuter singular 'было' in the past tense, regardless of whether the speaker is male or female.
Not knowing that 'мне жаль' is softer than 'извините'.
Different MeaningМне жаль, что я опоздал.Извините, что я опоздал.The sentence is correct and polite. 'Мне жаль' says you feel sorry about it. 'Извините' or 'простите' ask for forgiveness and are the usual choice for a direct apology.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn this pattern, you first need to understand how the dative case is used to mark the person experiencing a feeling (the experiencer). You also need to be familiar with the dative forms of personal pronouns and the concept of zero-copula predicates in the present tense, where words like 'холодно' (coldly/it is cold) function as the main verb.
