Focusing Это

The focusing это acts as a spotlight. While Russian usually uses word order to show importance, это provides a strong, explicit way to highlight a specific person, reason, or object, often to correct a misunderstanding.

How It Works

In Russian, the most important new information (the focus) usually comes at the end of a sentence. However, the focusing это allows you to pull that information to the front for dramatic or clarifying effect. This is known as a 'cleft sentence' in linguistics.

Key Characteristics:

  • Invariability: It is always это. Do not change it to эта or этот even if the noun is feminine or masculine.
  • Position: Place it directly before the element you are highlighting.
  • Logical Stress: The word immediately following это must carry the logical stress (фразовое ударение). You should emphasize it with a pitch drop or increased volume to signal that it is the focus.
  • Punctuation: In writing, no comma is used after the focusing это, even though you might hear a slight pause in speech.
  • No Connector: Unlike English ('It is you who...'), Russian does not use a relative pronoun like кто or который after the focused word.
  • Register: It is very common in spoken Russian (разговорная речь) to add emphasis or contrast.

This pattern is distinct from identification with это (e.g., 'This is a book') because here, это is a particle emphasizing a part of a complete action.

Examples (5)

  1. Это Иван разбил вазу.

It was Ivan who broke the vase.

Word by Word: It Ivan broke vase.

Here, 'это' focuses on the subject 'Иван', implying it wasn't someone else.

  2. Это тебя я ждал весь вечер.

It was you I was waiting for all evening.

Word by Word: It you I waited all evening.

The focus is on the object 'тебя' (you). Note that 'это' does not change to match the accusative case.

  3. Это из-за дождя мы не пошли гулять.

It's because of the rain that we didn't go for a walk.

Word by Word: It because-of rain we not went walk.

'Это' can highlight an entire prepositional phrase or reason.

  4. Это в Москве они познакомились.

It was in Moscow that they met.

Word by Word: It in Moscow they met.

The focus is on the location, contrasting it with other possible cities.

  5. Это я тебе звонил вчера.

It was me who called you yesterday.

Word by Word: It I to-you called yesterday.

A very common way to identify oneself as the performer of a past action.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to make 'это' agree with the gender of the noun.

    Эта мама купила торт.
    Это мама купила торт.

If you say 'Эта мама', it means 'This mother' (demonstrative). To say 'It was Mom who...', you must use the invariable particle 'Это'.

  • Adding a relative pronoun like 'кто' or 'который' after the focused word.

    Это он, кто сказал это.
    Это он сказал это.

English speakers often translate 'It is he WHO...' literally. In Russian, the focused word is followed directly by the rest of the sentence.
