чтобы + Purpose Clause

Purpose Clause with Чтобы

Level 3Sounds Like čtoby + celʹ

The conjunction чтобы (in order to / so that) connects a main action to its goal. It is the standard way to express 'why' someone does something.

How It Works

The pattern чтобы + цель (purpose) is essential for explaining intentions. Unlike the factual conjunction что, чтобы introduces a desired or hypothetical outcome.

1. Same Subject (Infinitive)
When the person doing the main action is the same person achieving the goal, use the infinitive.
Example: Я пришёл, чтобы помочь. (I came [in order] to help.)

2. Different Subjects (Subjunctive/Past Form)
If the goal involves someone else, the verb after чтобы must be in the past tense form. Even though it looks like the past, it functions as a subjunctive mood. Crucially, the verb must agree in gender and number with the new subject (e.g., чтобы она пришла vs чтобы они пришли).
Example: Я хочу, чтобы ты отдохнул. (I want you to rest.)

3. Syntax and Spelling

  • Word Order: The чтобы clause can follow the main clause or precede it for emphasis: Чтобы выучить язык, нужно много читать. (In order to learn the language, one must read a lot.)
  • Punctuation: Always place a comma before чтобы when it starts a subordinate clause.
  • Spelling Warning: Do not confuse the conjunction чтобы (purpose) with the pronoun + particle что бы (meaning 'whatever'). The latter is written as two words: Что бы ты ни делал... (Whatever you do...).
  • Negation: To say 'in order not to,' add не after the conjunction: чтобы не.

Examples (5)

  1. Он учит русский язык, чтобы поехать в Москву.

He is learning Russian in order to go to Moscow.

Word by Word: He learns Russian language, in-order-to to-go to Moscow.

Since the same person (he) is learning and going, we use the infinitive 'поехать'.

  2. Я дам тебе карту, чтобы ты не заблудился.

I will give you a map so that you don't get lost.

    Word by Word: I will-give to-you map, in-order-to you not got-lost.

The subjects are different (I vs. you), so the verb 'заблудился' is in the past form.

  3. Мама закрыла окно, чтобы дети не простудились.

Mother closed the window so that the children wouldn't catch cold.

Word by Word: Mother closed window, in-order-to children not caught-cold.

Different subjects (Mother vs. children) require the plural past form 'простудились'.

  4. Нужно много тренироваться, чтобы победить.

It is necessary to train a lot in order to win.

Word by Word: Necessary much to-train, in-order-to to-win.

Used with an impersonal 'нужно', the infinitive 'победить' expresses a general purpose.

  5. Я здесь, чтобы помочь вам.

I am here to help you.

    Word by Word: I [am] here, in-order-to to-help to-you.

A simple 'same subject' purpose clause using the infinitive.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the future tense after 'чтобы' for different subjects.

Я хочу, чтобы ты поможешь мне.
Я хочу, чтобы ты помог мне.

Even if the goal is in the future, Russian grammar requires the past-tense form (subjunctive) after 'чтобы' when subjects differ.

  • Using the infinitive when the subjects are different.

    Я хочу, чтобы ты помочь.
    Я хочу, чтобы ты помог.

English speakers often try to say 'I want you to help' literally. In Russian, if the subjects are different, you must use the past-form verb.

  • Forgetting the comma before 'чтобы'.

    Я пришёл чтобы работать.
    Я пришёл, чтобы работать.

In Russian, subordinate clauses must be separated from the main clause by a comma.
