будучи

Gerund Будучи

Level 4Sounds Like buduči

Будучи is the present gerund (adverbial participle) of the verb быть (to be). It translates to 'being' or 'as a...' and is used in formal writing to describe a subject's state or role while they perform another action.

How It Works

1. Usage and Register
Будучи is a hallmark of the книжный стиль (literary/formal style). You will encounter it in literature, academic papers, and journalism. In speech, Russians prefer using full subordinate clauses with когда (when) or потому что (because).

2. Grammatical Requirements
When you use будучи to describe a role or state, the case of the following word depends on its form:

  • Nouns and Long Adjectives: Use the Instrumental case (e.g., Будучи врачом..., Будучи уверенным...).
  • Short Adjectives: Use the Nominative case (e.g., Будучи болен, он остался дома).

3. Negation and Tense
The construction is often used in its negated form, не будучи (not being/without being). Additionally, будучи is tense-neutral; its time frame (past, present, or future) is determined entirely by the main verb of the sentence.

4. Punctuation and Logic
As a gerund, a phrase starting with будучи must always be set off by commas. Crucially, the subject of the main verb must be the one 'being' the state described. While it primarily shows simultaneity, it often implies causality ('because...') or concession ('although...').

Examples (4)

  1. Будучи студентом, он много путешествовал.

Being a student, he traveled a lot.

Word by Word: Being [a] student, he much traveled.

Here, 'будучи' describes a role (student) held during the time of the main action (traveling). 'Студентом' is in the instrumental case.

  2. Будучи очень осторожным, он проверил все документы дважды.

Being very cautious, he checked all the documents twice.

Word by Word: Being very cautious, he checked all documents twice.

This shows a causal link: because he was cautious, he checked twice. The adjective 'осторожным' is in the instrumental case.

  3. Будучи в Москве, мы обязательно зайдём к вам.

While being in Moscow, we will definitely stop by your place.

Word by Word: Being in Moscow, we definitely will-stop-by to you.

In this context, 'будучи' indicates a location/state during which the future action will occur.

  4. Будучи уверенным в успехе, он начал новый проект.

Being confident in success, he started a new project.

Word by Word: Being confident in success, he started new project.

The state of confidence exists at the same time as the start of the project.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Nominative case for nouns or long-form adjectives after 'будучи'.

    Будучи ребёнок, он любил рисовать.
    Будучи ребёнком, он любил рисовать.

After 'будучи', nouns and long-form adjectives must be in the Instrumental case. However, note that short-form adjectives (like 'болен') remain in the Nominative.

  • Dangling participle: The subject of 'будучи' does not match the main subject.

    Будучи маленьким, мне купили велосипед.
Когда я был маленьким, мне купили велосипед.

The person described by 'будучи' must be the same person performing the main action. In the incorrect example, the main clause is impersonal, creating a logical mismatch.

  • Forgetting to set off the 'будучи' phrase with commas.

    Будучи студентом он много путешествовал.
    Будучи студентом, он много путешествовал.

A gerund phrase is normally set off by commas, whether it comes first, in the middle, or last.
