The Simple Perfect

Level 5

The Simple Perfect (perfectul simplu) is a one-word past tense. It presents completed events in stories and is also used in Oltenian speech, often for recent events.

How It Works

Simple perfect in narration
The perfect simplu presents completed past events. It is common in literary narration, particularly in the third person: Deschise ușa și intră (“He or she opened the door and entered”).

Regional speech
In Oltenian speech it also commonly refers to recent events. This is a regional use of a standard tense, not a grammatical error. Recency is a usage tendency rather than an absolute same-day rule; do not assume a compound perfect necessarily means “yesterday”.

Recognizing forms
Some forms differ from the present only in stress: present cântă stresses the first syllable, while third-person simple perfect cântă stresses the last. Other verbs have visibly distinct forms, such as zise or făcu. Consult the simple-perfect paradigms rather than deriving every verb from one ending.

Choosing a tense
The compound perfect is common in conversation across Romania. Use context, genre, and the speaker’s variety to interpret the simple perfect. It does not by itself make a narrator objective or detached.

Examples (4)

  1. Făt-Frumos încălecă pe cal și plecă la drum.

Prince Charming mounted his horse and set off on his way.

Word by Word: Prince-Charming mounted on horse and left at road.

A classic literary example using the 3rd person singular. Note the stress on the final vowels: încălecă, plecă.

  2. Mâncai adineauri, nu mi-e foame.

I (just) ate a moment ago, I'm not hungry.

Word by Word: Ate-I just-now, not to-me-is hunger.

An Oltenian conversational use. Adineauri explicitly places the event a short time before speaking.

  3. Bătrânul tăcu o clipă, apoi se ridică.

The old man fell silent for a moment, then stood up.

Word by Word: Old-man-the fell-silent a moment, then himself raised.

Narrative use showing a sequence of completed actions in a story.

  4. Văzui filmul acesta chiar azi dimineață.

I saw this movie just this morning.

Word by Word: Saw-I movie-the this even today morning.

This illustrates a common recent-past use in Oltenia; azi dimineață explicitly dates the event to this morning.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing first- and second-person simple-perfect endings.

    Eu cântași.
    Eu cântai.

Cântași is second-person singular; cântai is first-person singular in the simple-perfect paradigm.
