Formal Purpose with Aby

Level 4

Aby is the formal counterpart to żeby. It is used in writing and official contexts to express purpose ('so that') or to introduce formal requests.

How It Works

1. Register and Usage
Aby is primarily a literary and formal word. You will encounter it in academic papers, legal documents, and formal letters. In casual speech, Poles almost always use żeby. The short form by is also considered formal or literary when used as a conjunction of purpose, similar to aby.

2. Sentence Position
While aby often connects two clauses, it can also be placed at the very beginning of a sentence to emphasize the purpose:
Aby zdać egzamin, musisz się uczyć. (In order to pass the exam, you must study.)

3. Same Subject: The Infinitive
When the person performing the action in the main clause is the same person intended to perform the action in the purpose clause, use the infinitive:
Pracuję ciężko, aby utrzymać rodzinę. (I work hard in order to support my family.)

4. Different Subjects: The Past Tense Form
When the subjects differ, aby must take a personal ending (clitic) and the verb must be in the past tense form (the -ł/-ła/-li form). The verb must agree in gender and number with the subject:

  • abym (I)
  • abyś (you sing.)
  • aby (he/she/it)
  • abyśmy (we)
  • abyście (you pl.)
  • aby (they)

Example: Chcę, abyś wiedział prawdę. (I want you [masc.] to know the truth) vs. Chcę, abyś wiedziała prawdę. (I want you [fem.] to know the truth).

5. Negative Purpose
To express "in order not to," simply place the negation nie before the verb:
Założyłem płaszcz, aby nie zmarznąć. (I put on a coat in order not to get cold.)

6. Formal Requests
In official signs or announcements, aby is often used with an infinitive to give a polite, impersonal command:
Prosimy, aby nie palić. (We request that one does not smoke.)

Examples (4)

  1. Podjął dodatkową pracę, aby zarobić na nowy samochód.

He took an extra job in order to earn money for a new car.

Word by Word: He-took additional work, in-order-to to-earn for new car.

Since the subject is the same (he), 'aby' is followed by the infinitive 'zarobić'.

  2. Rząd wprowadził nowe przepisy, abyśmy czuli się bezpieczniej.

The government introduced new regulations so that we would feel safer.

Word by Word: Government introduced new regulations, so-that-we felt ourselves safer.

The subjects are different (Government vs. We), so 'aby' takes the '-śmy' ending and the verb 'czuli' is in the past form.

  3. Prosimy, aby zachować ciszę podczas trwania egzaminu.

We request that silence be maintained during the exam.

Word by Word: We-request, in-order-to to-keep silence during duration of-exam.

A classic formal construction using 'aby' + infinitive for a polite request.

  4. Zrobię wszystko, abym mógł ci pomóc.

I will do everything so that I can help you.

    Word by Word: I-will-do everything, so-that-I could to-you to-help.

Even with the same subject, the past form 'mógł' can be used with the personal clitic 'abym' for emphasis or stylistic variety.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present tense instead of the past form when subjects differ.

    Chcę, abyś ty przyjdziesz jutro.
    Chcę, abyś przyszedł jutro.

After 'aby' (and 'żeby'), you must use the past-participle form, never the present or future tense.

  • Omitting the comma before 'aby'.

    Uczę się aby zdać egzamin.
    Uczę się, aby zdać egzamin.

In Polish, a comma is mandatory before subordinating conjunctions like 'aby' that introduce a new clause.

  • Using the more formal 'aby' in a quick request at home.

Different MeaningMamo, kup chleb, abyśmy mieli co jeść.
Mamo, kup chleb, żebyśmy mieli co jeść.

'Aby' is correct, but it is more formal and bookish than 'żeby'. It is fine in writing, while in a quick request to your mother 'żeby' sounds more natural.
