Formal Nominal Style
The Formal Nominal Style (styl nominalny) is the hallmark of Polish administrative, academic, and legal writing. It shifts the focus from people to actions by replacing verbs with nouns.
How It Works
In advanced Polish, the Formal Nominal Style is used to achieve a tone of objectivity and abstraction. It is characterized by several key features:
1. Nominalization: Replacing personal verbs with verbal nouns (ending in -anie, -enie, -cie) or deverbal nouns often ending in -cja (e.g., produkcja, konsumpcja) or -za (e.g., analiza).
2. Depersonalization: By using nouns, the 'actor' is removed, making the text sound like an official fact. This often involves 'support verbs' like dokonać (to perform/make) or nastąpić (to occur) to carry the tense while the noun carries the meaning. It often pairs with impersonal verb forms.
3. Syntactic Shift: When a verb becomes a noun, its object must change from the Accusative to the Genitive.
Example: Czytać książkę (Acc.) → Czytanie książki (Gen.).
4. Complex Prepositional Phrases: Simple conjunctions or prepositions are replaced by multi-word phrases to sound more precise and official, such as w celu (in order to), w zakresie (in the scope of), or w drodze (by way of).
5. Register: This style is standard in styl urzędowy (officialese) and styl naukowy (academic style). While it conveys authority, overusing it can lead to 'noun piling,' making the text dense.
Examples (4)
- Dokonanie analizy zebranych danych pozwoliło na sformułowanie wniosków.
The performance of the analysis of the collected data allowed for the formulation of conclusions.
Word by Word: Performance (of) analysis (of) collected data allowed on formulation (of) conclusions.
This sentence uses three verbal nouns (dokonanie, analizy, sformułowanie) to sound highly professional and objective.
- Uprasza się o niepalenie tytoniu w budynku.
One is requested regarding the non-smoking of tobacco in the building.
Word by Word: Requests itself about non-smoking (of) tobacco in building.
A classic example of official signage using an impersonal verb and a negated verbal noun.
- Po otrzymaniu wiadomości proszę o niezwłoczny kontakt.
After the receipt of the message, I request immediate contact.
Word by Word: After receipt (of) message I-request about immediate contact.
Common in business correspondence, using 'po otrzymaniu' (after receiving) instead of a personal clause like 'kiedy Pan otrzyma' (when you receive).
- Wprowadzenie nowych przepisów nastąpi w przyszłym miesiącu.
The introduction of new regulations will occur next month.
Word by Word: Introduction (of) new regulations will-occur in next month.
Focuses on the event ('introduction') rather than who is introducing the laws.
Common Mistakes
Using the Accusative case for the object of a verbal noun.
Pisanie książkę jest trudne.Pisanie książki jest trudne. In the nominal style, the object of the action must always be in the Genitive case, not the Accusative. Feminine nouns like 'książka' clearly show this shift from -ę to -i.
Using the wrong aspect for the verbal noun.
Po robieniu zakupów wróciłem do domu.Po zrobieniu zakupów wróciłem do domu.Verbal nouns retain the aspect of the original verb. Use 'zrobienie' (perfective) for completed actions and 'robienie' (imperfective) for ongoing processes.
Using nominal style in casual conversation.
Czy dokonałeś konsumpcji obiadu?Zjadłeś obiad? The nominal style sounds 'stiff' or even sarcastic in casual settings. Stick to personal verbs with friends.
