Everyday Object Markers رو and ـو

Level 2

In everyday Iranian, این کتاب رو خوندم means I read this book. رو or an attached ـو commonly corresponds to written-standard را.

How It Works

Keep the same object role. Written این کتاب را خواندم and everyday این کتاب رو خوندم both identify this book as the object of reading. The marker changes with the register, and خواندم also has a common spoken counterpart خوندم.

Informal writing may separate the marker as رو or attach a reduced ـو: کتاب رو and کتابو. After a complete owner phrase, it still comes at the phrase’s end: کتابِ سارا رو. The marker does not jump back to the head noun.

These spellings represent common Iranian conversation. They are useful for recognizing dialogue and casual messages; formal prose normally retains را. Speakers and writers vary in which casual spelling they choose.

Do not confuse the object marker with روی, the location word in رویِ میز, or with رو as another word in a different construction. Identify the phrase and verb before deciding what the letters mean.
