Comparing Two Things

Level 3

بزرگ‌تر means bigger. این خانه از آن خانه بزرگ‌تر است compares this house with that house.

How It Works

Build a comparative. بزرگ → بزرگ‌تر gives “big → bigger.” Modern standard writing commonly uses a half-space before ـتر. زیبا → زیباتر is another familiar form with a nonjoining vowel-final stem.

Name the standard. این خانه از آن خانه بزرگ‌تر است means “This house is bigger than that house.” The از phrase can also follow the adjective: این خانه بزرگ‌تر از آن خانه است. The basic comparison stays the same.

In this comparison, از does not mean a physical source. It marks the thing or person against which the quality is compared.

Common بهتر is the ordinary comparative of خوب. Forms such as خوب‌تر can occur with their own context or register; do not label an attested variant wrong simply because the beginner default is بهتر.

If the comparison standard is already clear, the sentence can leave it unspoken: این بهتر است, “This is better.” Do not invent a required second item when the conversation already supplies it.
