ni ... ni

Neither ... nor

Level 3

Pas ni ... ni joins two negatives: neither ... nor.

How It Works

PatternExample
pas ni ... ni, with nounsBevi pas ni vin ni cervesa.
pas ni ... ni, with adjectivesSoi pas ni cansat ni malaut.
pas ni ... ni, with infinitivesJoan sap pas ni legir ni escriure.

Repeat ni before each item: ni vin ni cervesa. The items can be nouns, adjectives, infinitives or whole phrases.

The pattern is the same in every tense: Joan aviá pas ni fam ni set.

Occitan has no ne before the verb. Pas carries the negative.

A quick check: if English says neither ... nor after a verb, Occitan uses pas ni ... ni.
