tot, tota, totes, totas

All and Every

Level 2

Tot means all, the whole or every, and it agrees with its noun.

How It Works

Tot agrees with the noun that follows its article. The singular means the whole of something, and the plural means all of them.

SingularPlural
Masculinetot lo jorntotes los amics
Femininetota la setmanatotas las cadièras

The plural totes is the form this course uses. You will also read tots in print, and both are correct.

Tot lo monde means everyone. Monde is a masculine singular noun, so the verb stays singular: Tot lo monde es aicí. For every day, the common phrase is cada jorn, which has its own entry.

Examples (4)

  1. Trabalhi tot lo jorn.

    I work all day.

Tot lo jorn covers the whole day.

  2. Maria es aicí tota la setmana.

    Maria is here all week.

Tota agrees with the feminine noun setmana.

  3. Totes los dròlles son contents.

    All the children are happy.

Totes goes with a masculine plural noun.

  4. Tot lo monde es aicí.

    Everyone is here.

Tot lo monde takes a singular verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving tot unchanged before a feminine plural noun.

    Tot las cadièras son blavas.
    Totas las cadièras son blavas.

Tot agrees in gender and number: totas goes with las cadièras.
