On and About
Use fuq before a noun phrase, or attach a person ending: fuqi, fuqek, fuqu, fuqha, fuqna, fuqkom, fuqhom.
How It Works
Fuq introduces a location on a surface, a position above something, or a discussion topic. It remains separate before a definite complement: fuq il-ktieb. The article attaches to the noun and follows its normal changes, including assimilation in fuq id-dar. An indefinite complement can appear without an article.
The attached forms are fuqi, fuqek, fuqu, fuqha, fuqna, fuqkom, fuqhom. They identify me, you singular, him, her, us, you plural and them. For an inanimate reference point, the ending follows that noun’s gender and number.
Compare Il-karta fuq il-ktieb, ‘The paper is on the book’, with Il-karta fuqu, ‘The paper is on it’. Masculine fuqu refers to the book although the paper is feminine. A discussion predicate instead gives a topic reading; context distinguishes this from location.
