A Lexical Meaning Across a Phrase

Level 6

Jiddependi minn names a determining factor; qabel dwar names an agreement topic; ħeles minn names what someone becomes free of.

How It Works

Learn a conventional verb–preposition combination as a whole pattern. With jiddependi minn, the complement identifies a determining factor. With ħeles minn, it identifies something a participant becomes free of. Agreement belongs to the verb; the preposition introduces a noun phrase or takes its own pronominal form.

The combinations vary in transparency. Dependence does not describe movement away from a place, although minn can express physical origin elsewhere. Before an article-bearing noun it combines with the article, including assimilation. Agreement topics can be introduced by fuq or dwar.

In Il-vjaġġ jiddependi mit-temp., the journey depends on the weather: mit- contains the assimilated article. In Qbilna dwar il-prezz tal-karozza., we agreed about the car's price; dwar names the topic.

Rita ħelset minn dak l-inkwiet. means that Rita became free of that trouble. Feminine perfect ħelset identifies the participant becoming free.
