mhux se
A Future Negative
Mhux + se + subject-appropriate imperfect.
How It Works
Use mhux se before an imperfect appropriate to the subject. The verb identifies person and number, and gender in the third-person singular. Mhux and se remain unchanged in this pattern. The following verb does not take negative -x merely because the prospective event is denied.
Context can make the sentence a prediction, decision or refusal. Compare se nixtri, “I am going to buy,” with mhux se nixtri, “I am not going to buy.” Ordinary ma nixtrix has a different formation and context-dependent time reference. Modern spelling is mhux. Other future markers include ħa, especially in speech; the supplied negative mhux ħa witness is specifically from Sannati dialect usage.
Examples (3)
- Mhux se nixtri ġelat illum.
I am not going to buy ice cream today.
The prospective purchase is denied.
- Marta mhux se taħdem filgħaxija.
Marta will not work in the evening.
Taħdem agrees with Marta.
- Il-ħwienet mhux se jiftħu għada.
The shops will not open tomorrow.
The plural imperfect stays affirmative in form.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Negate a prediction or intended event by placing mhux before se while preserving the complement's affirmative imperfect form. Interpret prediction, decision, and refusal through context, and keep the Sannati ħa witness explicitly scoped.
- se / ser + imperfectA Future Event
The affirmative prospective pattern establishes the event and agreement structure that mhux se negates.

The earlier negator lesson establishes invariant mhux and its construction-sensitive distribution, supporting its use before se with an affirmative-form complement.
