Topic Framing with Kalau

Level 4

In colloquial Malay, kalau is often used to frame a topic rather than to set a condition. It translates to 'as for,' 'speaking of,' or 'regarding.'

How It Works

In everyday spoken Malay (Bahasa Basahan), kalau frequently functions as a topic-framing marker.

1. Function:
Instead of creating a hypothetical 'if' scenario, it sets the stage for what you are about to talk about. It is equivalent to the English phrases 'As for...', 'When it comes to...', or 'Regarding...'.

2. Structure:
It is almost always placed at the very beginning of the sentence or clause, followed by the topic being discussed. This topic can be a noun phrase, a verb, or even a short phrase. In speech, there is usually a slight pause after the topic.

  • Kalau saya... (As for me...)
  • Kalau makan, dia laju. (When it comes to eating, he is fast.)

3. Register and Restrictions:
This usage is highly informal. You will hear it constantly in daily conversation, but in formal writing (Bahasa Baku), you should use more formal prepositions like tentang, mengenai, or berkenaan dengan. Crucially, the formal conditional jika cannot be used this way; it is strictly for 'if' clauses.

4. Contrast:
It is often used to switch topics or contrast two things. For example, if you are talking about a trip, you might say 'The hotel was great. Kalau the food, it was just okay.'

Examples (4)

  1. Kalau saya, saya tak setuju.

As for me, I don't agree.

Word by Word: If/As-for I, I not agree.

Here, 'kalau' identifies the speaker as the topic of the opinion, rather than setting a condition.

  2. Kalau tempat tu, memang ramai orang.

As for that place, there are definitely many people.

Word by Word: As-for place that, indeed many people.

The speaker is framing 'that place' as the topic before describing it.

  3. Hari ini kita makan ayam. Kalau esok?

Today we are eating chicken. What about tomorrow?

Word by Word: Day this we eat chicken. As-for tomorrow?

In this short conversational question, 'kalau' shifts the focus to a new time frame (tomorrow).

  4. Kalau soal kos, jangan risau.

Regarding the matter of cost, don't worry.

Word by Word: As-for matter cost, don't worry.

This frames the 'cost' as the specific topic the listener shouldn't worry about.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'jika' as a topic marker.

    Jika saya, saya tidak setuju.
    Kalau saya, saya tidak setuju.

While 'kalau' and jika are often interchangeable for 'if', only 'kalau' can be used to frame a topic (As for...). 'Jika' is strictly for conditional statements.

  • Using 'kalau' as a topic marker in formal writing.

Kalau isu ini, pihak kerajaan perlu bertindak.
Berkenaan dengan isu ini, pihak kerajaan perlu bertindak.

In formal contexts like essays or official reports, 'kalau' should only be used for 'if'. Use berkenaan dengan or mengenai for 'regarding'.

  • Both are fine; 'tentang' only makes the topic more explicit.

Kalau tentang saya, saya okey saja.
    Kalau saya, saya okey saja.

'Kalau saya' is shorter. 'Kalau tentang saya' is also natural in speech and a little more explicit.
