tentang / mengenai
Topic Prepositions
Both tentang and mengenai translate to 'about' or 'concerning' in English. While often interchangeable, tentang is a pure preposition, whereas mengenai is grammatically a transitive verb derived from the root kena (to hit).
How It Works
In Malay, introducing a subject matter requires choosing between a preposition and a functional verb shift.
1. Tentang (Preposition):
Classified as a kata sendi nama (preposition), it is used to link a noun phrase to a topic. It is the most common way to say 'about' in both spoken and written Malay.
2. Mengenai (Transitive Verb):
Formed using the meN- prefix + kena + -i suffix. Because it is technically a transitive verb, it must be followed directly by a noun (the object) without any intervening prepositions like tentang or pada.
3. Register Differences:
- Tentang: Standard, neutral, and versatile.
- Mengenai: Formal, literary, and common in news or academic reports.
- Pasal: In everyday conversation, it is a colloquial synonym for 'about'. However, in formal or legal contexts, pasal (or fasal) is a noun meaning 'clause', 'article', or 'section'.
4. Physical Meaning:
Only mengenai can describe physical contact. For example, 'The ball hit the window' would use mengenai, never tentang.
Examples (5)
- Kami berbincang tentang rancangan cuti itu.
We discussed the holiday plan.
Word by Word: We discuss about plan holiday that.
Here, 'tentang' acts as a standard preposition introducing the topic of discussion.
- Terdapat banyak maklumat mengenai sejarah Malaysia.
There is a lot of information regarding Malaysian history.
Word by Word: There-is many information regarding history Malaysia.
In this formal context, 'mengenai' is used as a synonym for 'about'.
- Anak panah itu mengenai sasaran.
The arrow hit the target.
Word by Word: Child arrow that hit target.
This demonstrates the literal meaning of 'mengenai' (to hit), which 'tentang' cannot do.
- Saya tidak tahu apa-apa tentang perkara ini.
I don't know anything about this matter.
Word by Word: I not know anything about matter this.
A common everyday use of 'tentang' to refer to an abstract subject.
- Laporan itu memberikan penjelasan mengenai isu tersebut.
The report provides an explanation regarding that issue.
Word by Word: Report that give explanation regarding issue that.
A typical formal sentence where 'mengenai' functions as a transitive verb followed directly by the noun 'isu'.
Common Mistakes
Adding a preposition after 'mengenai'.
Laporan itu mengenai tentang ekonomi.Laporan itu mengenai ekonomi.Because 'mengenai' is a transitive verb, it does not need another preposition like 'tentang' after it. It links directly to the noun.
Using 'terhadap' instead of 'tentang' for general topics.
Saya berfikir terhadap masa depan.Saya berfikir tentang masa depan.Use 'terhadap' for feelings or actions directed toward a specific entity (like 'kindness towards others'), but use 'tentang' for general thoughts or topics.
Related Patterns

'Mengenai' is a prime example of the 'k' in 'kena' being replaced by 'ng' when the meN- prefix is added.
Level 3 - -iBasic -i Target Marking
The '-i' suffix in 'mengenai' makes it a transitive verb that must be followed by a direct object.
Level 2 - berkenaan denganConcerning with Berkenaan Dengan
Another formal way to say 'concerning', but unlike 'mengenai', it requires the preposition 'dengan'.
Level 5 - menurutAccording to with Menurut
Used to cite a source ('according to'), which is a specific type of topic reference.
Level 2 - untukFor with Untuk
While 'tentang' is about the topic, 'untuk' is used for the purpose or the person receiving the action.
