ketidak-...-an

Negated Abstract Nouns

Level 4

The ketidak-...-an pattern turns a negative state into a formal noun. It is the Malay equivalent of English prefixes like in-, un-, or dis- (e.g., injustice, uncertainty).

How It Works

The ketidak-...-an pattern is a hallmark of formal Malay (Bahasa Melayu Baku). While a simple phrase like tidak adil (not fair) describes a person or action, the noun ketidakadilan (injustice) describes a concept or systemic issue.

Key Characteristics:

  • Formal Register: It is primarily used in academic writing, legal documents, and news reporting. It is rarely heard in casual conversation.
  • Morphology and Stability: It attaches to roots that are normally negated by tidak. Unlike some other prefixes, the initial 'k' in this circumfix is stable and does not undergo nasalization or dropping.
  • Attachment to Prefixed Roots: This pattern can also be applied to roots that already carry prefixes like ber- or ter-. Examples include ketidakberkesanan (ineffectiveness) and ketidakteraturan (irregularity).
  • Orthography: The entire construction must be written as a single word without spaces (e.g., ketidakpastian, not ke tidak pastian).
  • Conceptualization: It allows speakers to package complex negative states into a single noun that can function as a subject or object in a sentence.

Note that this pattern cannot be used with bukan. You cannot create words like *kebukanan.

Examples (4)

  1. Ketidakpastian ekonomi dunia membimbangkan banyak pihak.

The global economic uncertainty is worrying many parties.

Word by Word: Uncertainty economy world worry many parties.

Here, 'ketidakpastian' (uncertainty) is derived from 'pasti' (certain).

  2. Rakyat membantah ketidakadilan dalam sistem tersebut.

The people are protesting the injustice in that system.

Word by Word: People protest injustice in system that.

'Ketidakadilan' (injustice) is the abstract noun form of 'tidak adil' (not fair).

  3. Ketidaksamaan peluang pendidikan masih menjadi isu besar.

Inequality of educational opportunities is still a major issue.

Word by Word: Inequality opportunity education still become issue big.

'Ketidaksamaan' (inequality) comes from 'sama' (same/equal).

  4. Beliau menyatakan ketidaksetujuan terhadap cadangan itu.

He expressed disagreement toward that proposal.

Word by Word: He express disagreement toward proposal that.

This shows the pattern applied to a stative verb 'setuju' (to agree) to form 'disagreement'.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the circumfix with spaces between the components.

    ke tidak adilan
    ketidakadilan

In Malay, the circumfix ketidak-...-an must be written as a single, unified word. You should never separate the prefix 'ke', the negation 'tidak', the root, or the suffix '-an' with spaces.

  • Using the informal short form 'tak' within the circumfix.

    ketakadilan
    ketidakadilan

Because this is a formal grammatical structure, the full word 'tidak' must be used. The colloquial 'tak' is never used in this pattern.

  • Forgetting the suffix '-an'.

    ketidakadil
    ketidakadilan

The circumfix ke-...-an must be complete to function as a nominalizer. Without the '-an', the word is grammatically incomplete.

Learn This First

To understand ketidak-...-an, learners must first be familiar with how ke-...-an creates abstract nouns from adjectives or verbs. They also need to understand the basic negation marker 'tidak', as this pattern specifically packages the 'lack' or 'absence' of a quality into a single noun form.
