Concession with Biarpun

Level 2

Use biarpun to introduce a fact that contrasts with the main point of your sentence. It is the equivalent of 'although' or 'despite the fact that' in English.

How It Works

In Malay grammar, biarpun is classified as a kata hubung keterangan pertentangan (concessive conjunction).

Key characteristics include:

  • Spelling Rule: Unlike the general rule where pun is written separately, biarpun is one of 13 fixed words where the particle must be attached (serangkai) to the root.
  • Placement: It can be placed at the beginning of a sentence or in the middle to link two clauses.
  • Register: It is more formal than the conversational tapi and slightly more literary than the common walaupun.
  • Structure: Standard Malay avoids using a second contrastive word like tetapi in the main clause when the sentence starts with biarpun.
  • Nuance: While often interchangeable with walaupun, biarpun can sometimes imply a stronger sense of 'no matter how' or 'even if'.

Although his body was tired, he still continued his journey.

Here, 'biarpun' introduces the condition of being tired, which contrasts with the action of continuing the journey.

  2. Hubungan mereka tetap mesra biarpun terdapat perbezaan pendapat.

Their relationship remains close even though there are differences of opinion.

Word by Word: Relationship they remain close although exist difference opinion.

In this example, 'biarpun' is used in the middle of the sentence to link the two contrasting ideas.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing 'biar pun' as two separate words.

Biar pun hari hujan, dia tetap keluar.
Biarpun hari hujan, dia tetap keluar.

'Biarpun' is one of the fixed words in which 'pun' is written attached to the word before it. Writing it with a space is a common spelling error.

  • Using 'tetapi' (but) in the main clause after starting with 'biarpun'.

Biarpun dia kaya, tetapi dia kedekut.
    Biarpun dia kaya, dia kedekut.

In standard Malay, 'biarpun' already establishes the contrast. Adding tetapi is redundant and considered grammatically incorrect in formal writing.

  • Using 'biar' alone for 'although' in writing.

Biar dia sakit, dia pergi kerja.
Biarpun dia sakit, dia pergi kerja.

'Biar' usually means 'let' ('Biar dia pergi'). It can mean 'even if' in speech, but writing uses 'biarpun' or walaupun.
