Sentence-level Contrast with Namun

Level 4

Use namun to introduce a contrast. It can start a new sentence (followed by a comma) or join two clauses within a sentence (preceded by a comma).

How It Works

In formal Malay, namun is a powerful tool for building fluency in complex transitions.

Key rules for usage:

  • Sentence Connector: When starting a new sentence, namun must be followed by a comma. It links the new thought to the previous sentence.
  • Coordinating Conjunction: It can also join two clauses within one sentence, similar to tetapi. In this case, a comma usually precedes it, but no comma follows it (e.g., Dia kaya, namun kedekut).
  • Register: It is more formal than tapi.
  • Comparison with 'tetapi': While namun is often used to start sentences in formal writing, starting a sentence with tetapi is generally discouraged in strict formal grammar.
  • Variations: Common emphatic forms include namun begitu or namun demikian ('nevertheless').

Examples (3)

  1. Pasukan itu telah berlatih dengan gigih. Namun, mereka tetap tewas dalam perlawanan akhir.

The team trained hard. However, they still lost in the final match.

Word by Word: Team that already train with diligent. However, they still lose in match final.

Shows a contrast between the effort (training hard) and the result (losing).

  2. Beliau sudah mencapai usia persaraan. Namun begitu, semangatnya untuk berbakti tidak pernah pudar.

He has reached retirement age. Nevertheless, his passion for serving has never faded.

Word by Word: He (respectful) already reach age retirement. However like-that, spirit-his for serve not ever fade.

Uses the emphatic variation 'namun begitu' to link the two sentences.

  3. Projek itu sangat mencabar. Namun, kami berjaya menyiapkannya tepat pada masanya.

The project was very challenging. However, we succeeded in completing it right on time.

Word by Word: Project that very challenging. However, we succeed complete-it exact on time-its.

A standard formal transition showing an unexpected positive outcome despite difficulties.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'namun' together with 'walaupun' in the same sentence.

Walaupun hujan, namun dia pergi juga.
    Walaupun hujan, dia pergi juga.

Using both walaupun (although) and 'namun' (yet) in one sentence is redundant. Choose one or the other to maintain grammatical clarity.

  • Forgetting the comma after 'namun' at the start of a sentence.

    Namun dia tidak datang.
    Namun, dia tidak datang.

When 'namun' acts as a sentence-level transition, it must be followed by a comma to separate the introductory conjunction from the main clause.
