His Her Our Your and Their

Level 1Sounds Like negov; neǰzin; naš; vaš; niven

Негов is his, нејзин her, наш our, ваш your and нивен their: неговата сестра, нашиот стан, нивните деца.

How It Works

The forms with the article.

  • his: неговиот, неговата, неговото, неговите
  • her: нејзиниот, нејзината, нејзиното, нејзините
  • our: нашиот, нашата, нашето, нашите
  • your: вашиот, вашата, вашето, вашите
  • their: нивниот, нивната, нивното, нивните

The masculine forms take -иот, like adjectives. Нивен loses its е before an ending: нивна, нивниот.

His or her. Choose by the owner: Марко и неговата сестра, Ана и нејзиниот брат. The ending then follows the noun.

Ваш. It means your for several people, and also your for one person you speak to politely. In letters and messages the polite form is written with a capital В: Ваш. See Informal and Polite You.

Without the article. As with мој, use the bare form after сум or for one of several: Колата е наша. (The car is ours.) Тој е наш пријател. (He is a friend of ours.)

When the owner is the subject of the sentence, Macedonian often uses свој instead. See One's Own.

Examples (6)

  1. Неговата сестра живее во Охрид.

    His sister lives in Ohrid.

  2. Нејзиниот брат е студент.

    Her brother is a student.

Нејзин because the owner is a woman, -иот because брат is masculine.

  3. Нашиот стан е мал.

    Our apartment is small.

  4. Нивните деца се на училиште.

    Their children are at school.

    Нивен loses its е: нивните.

  5. Каде е вашата кола?

    Where is your car?

  6. Ова е нашето село.

    This is our village.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing his or her by the thing owned instead of the owner, when you mean Ana's own brother.

Ана и неговиот брат одат на море.
Ана и нејзиниот брат одат на море.

The brother belongs to Ana, a woman, so the word is нејзин even though брат is masculine. Only the ending -иот follows брат.

  • Keeping the е of нивен before an ending.

    Нивенот стан е голем.
    Нивниот стан е голем.

Нивен loses its е before an ending, and the masculine article is -иот.

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Нашиот куќа е стара.
    Нашата куќа е стара.

Куќа is feminine, so the form is нашата.
