Feminine Plural in -и
Plural of Feminine Nouns
To make a feminine noun plural, change the final -а to -и: жена → жени, куќа → куќи.
How It Works
Change -а to -и. This covers almost all feminine nouns:
- жена → жени (women)
- куќа → куќи (houses)
- сестра → сестри (sisters)
- улица → улици (streets)
К and г stay the same. Masculine nouns change к to ц before -и, but feminine nouns do not:
- девојка → девојки (girls)
- мајка → мајки (mothers)
- книга → книги (books)
Nouns in -ија. The -а changes to -и as usual, so the word ends in -ии: историја → истории, линија → линии.
Feminine nouns ending in a consonant. Add -и: ноќ → ноќи (nights), пролет → пролети (springs), радост → радости (joys). See Feminine Nouns Ending in a Consonant.
After numbers. Feminine nouns use this same plural: две жени, три книги.
With the article. Add -те: жените (the women), куќите (the houses), ноќите (the nights). See The Definite Article.
Two very common nouns are irregular: рака → раце (hands) and нога → нозе (legs). See Irregular Plurals.
Examples (6)
- Во кафулето седат три жени.
Three women are sitting in the café.
Feminine nouns use the ordinary plural after numbers too.
- Куќите во селото се стари.
The houses in the village are old.
Куќа → куќи, and -те adds the article.
- Имам многу книги.
I have a lot of books.
Книга → книги: the г stays.
- Девојките учат македонски.
The girls are learning Macedonian.
Девојка → девојки: the к stays.
- Ноќите во планина се ладни.
The nights in the mountains are cold.
Ноќ ends in a consonant, so it just adds -и.
- Моите сестри живеат во Битола.
My sisters live in Bitola.
Common Mistakes
Changing к to ц as in masculine plurals.
Девојците учат македонски.Девојките учат македонски.Only masculine nouns change к to ц. Feminine nouns keep it: девојка → девојки.
Keeping the singular after a number.
Имам три книга.Имам три книги.After a number, a feminine noun takes its ordinary plural in -и.
Giving a feminine consonant noun a masculine plural.
Ноќовите се ладни.Ноќите се ладни.Ноќ is feminine, so it takes -и, not the masculine -ови.
