макар што / и покрај тоа што
Even Though and Despite the Fact
Макар што and и покрај тоа што work like иако (although): И покрај тоа што беше болна, отиде на работа. (Despite the fact that she was ill, she went to work.) They are longer than иако and can give the obstacle more weight.
How It Works
Three ways to say "although".
- иако: the most common word
- макар што: a longer word for "although"
- и покрај тоа што: "despite the fact that", which presents the obstacle as a fact
И покрај тоа што беше болна, отиде на работа. Макар што е богат, живее скромно. Не ми веруваше, и покрај тоа што му ја кажав вистината.
Order and comma. The clause can come first or second. When it comes first, put a comma after it. The main clause can add сепак for extra contrast (see сепак, меѓутоа and напротив).
Keep the и. Without и, покрај тоа што usually adds a fact ("besides the fact that"): Покрај тоа што е паметна, таа е и многу љубезна. See освен што and покрај тоа што. The и makes the contrast clear.
Keep the што. Before a clause, the phrase needs што. И покрај тоа without што means "despite that" and points back to something already said: Беше болна. И покрај тоа, отиде на работа. Before a plain noun, use и покрај with a noun: И покрај болеста, отиде на работа.
Макар without што means something else. Макар и да means "even if", and the particle макар means "at least": Кажи макар еден збор. (Say at least one word.)
