selwecht
The Same: Selwecht
Selwecht means the same. It goes between the article and the noun and takes normal adjective endings: de selwechte Wee, déi selwecht Plaz, dat selwecht Buch.
How It Works
1. The forms
Selwecht behaves like any adjective after an article:
- masculine: de selwechten Dag, de selwechte Wee by the n-rule (adjective endings masculine)
- feminine: déi selwecht Plaz (adjective endings feminine and plural)
- neuter: dat selwecht Buch. The neuter ending is -t, and selwecht already ends in t, so nothing is added (adjective endings neuter -t).
- plural: déi selwecht Leit
You can use the short article de or the stressed deen: de selwechte Wee or dee selwechte Wee.
2. In the dative
After a dative preposition, use the dative endings: am selwechten Haus, bei deem selwechten Händler, mat där selwechter Héiflechkeet, mat deene selwechte Symptomer.
3. The same thing
Without a noun, dat selwecht means the same thing: Et ass ëmmer dat selwecht mat dir! (It's always the same with you!)
4. The same as
To compare, use ewéi or wéi, as in esou ... wéi: déi selwecht Aefaarf ewéi meng Mamm. On its own after a verb, d'selwecht means the same or alike: D'Wieder war d'selwecht ewéi am Juli.
Examples (6)

I take the same route to work every day.
Masculine -en loses its n before W by the n-rule.

Dative after am: selwechten; H keeps the n.

I have the same eye colour as my mother.
Aefaarf is feminine, so selwecht has no ending.

We have the same book.
The neuter form is simply selwecht.
- Et ass ëmmer dat selwecht mat dir!
It's always the same with you!

The weather was the same as in July.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out the masculine ending.
Ech fueren all Dag de selwecht Wee.Ech fueren all Dag de selwechte Wee.Wee is masculine, so selwecht takes -en, which becomes -e before W by the n-rule.
Using the masculine ending with a neuter noun.
Mir hunn dat selwechte Buch.Mir hunn dat selwecht Buch.Buch is neuter, so selwecht takes the neuter -t, which it already has. The -en ending is only for masculine nouns.
Using als to compare.
Ech hunn déi selwecht Aefaarf als meng Mamm.Ech hunn déi selwecht Aefaarf ewéi meng Mamm. After selwecht, the comparison word is ewéi or wéi. Als means as, in a role.
