als
As, In a Role: Als
Als says in what role or at what stage: Si schafft als Enseignante. (She works as a teacher.) Als Kand war ech dacks krank. (As a child, I was often ill.)
How It Works
1. A role, a job or a function
Als tells us in what role someone does something, or what something is used as:
- Mäi Brudder schafft als Elektriker. (My brother works as an electrician.)
- D'Noperen hunn eis eng Fläsch Wäin als Kaddo matbruecht. (The neighbours brought us a bottle of wine as a present.)
2. A stage of life
Als Kand war ech dacks krank. Schonn als Kand hunn ech mech fir Musek interesséiert.
3. Article or no article?
A job or role follows als directly: als Enseignante, als Proff. When you say how something is seen or taken, an article is possible: Ech faassen dat als e Kompliment op. (I take that as a compliment.)
4. Not for comparisons
To compare, Luxembourgish uses wéi: Hien ass méi al wéi ech. Hatt ass esou grouss wéi säi Papp. See Comparing: Méi ... wéi and As ... As: Esou ... wéi.
5. Not for when
For one event or period in the past, use wéi: Wéi ech kleng war, hu mer zu Esch gewunnt. For the present and future, use wann. Als is followed by a noun, never by a whole clause: als Kand, but wéi ech kleng war. See When in the Past: Wéi.
Examples (6)
- Si schafft als Enseignante.
She works as a teacher.
No article before a job after als.
- Als Kand war ech dacks krank.
As a child, I was often ill.
Als Kand fills the first place, so the verb war comes next.
- Mäi Brudder schafft als Elektriker an der Stad.
My brother works as an electrician in the city.
- D'Noperen hunn eis eng Fläsch Wäin als Kaddo matbruecht.
The neighbours brought us a bottle of wine as a present.
Als can also say what something is used as.
- Als Proff muss ee vill Gedold hunn.
As a teacher, you need a lot of patience.
Een is the impersonal you, written ee before v.
- Ech faassen déi Bemierkung als e Kompliment op.
I take that remark as a compliment.
With verbs of seeing or taking something as, an article can follow als.
Common Mistakes
Using als in a comparison.
