Predicate Adjectives: sinn
Adjectives After Sinn
After sinn, an adjective stays in its basic form: D'Haus ass grouss. D'Zopp ass waarm.
How It Works
An adjective can stand in two places. It can come before a noun: e grousst Haus (a big house). Or it can come after a verb like sinn: D'Haus ass grouss. (The house is big.)
After the verb, the adjective never changes. It is the same for every gender and for plurals:
- masculine: Den Téi ass waarm.
- feminine: D'Zopp ass waarm.
- neuter: D'Haus ass grouss.
- plural: D'Kanner si frou.
Compare an adjective before a noun, which does take an ending: e waarmen Téi, e grousst Haus. See masculine endings and neuter endings.
Three verbs work this way: sinn (to be), ginn (to become) and bleiwen (to stay). Et gëtt kal. (It's getting cold.) Den Téi bleift laang waarm. (The tea stays warm for a long time.)
The n-rule still applies to the verb: D'Kanner si frou, but D'Kanner sinn hei.
