ëmmer méi

More and More: Ëmmer Méi

Level 4

Ëmmer méi means more and more: Et gëtt ëmmer méi deier. Ëmmer méi Leit schwätze Lëtzebuergesch.

How It Works

1. With an adjective
Most adjectives form the comparative with méi, so put ëmmer in front: Et gëtt ëmmer méi deier. D'Deeg ginn ëmmer méi laang. The verb ginn (to become) is the usual partner for this kind of change.

2. One-word comparatives
With besser, léiwer or manner, ëmmer goes directly before them, without méi (besser/léiwer/manner): Däi Lëtzebuergesch gëtt ëmmer besser!

3. With a noun
Ëmmer méi and ëmmer manner go before the noun, which has no article: Ëmmer méi Leit schwätze Lëtzebuergesch. Ech hunn ëmmer manner Zäit.

4. With a verb
Hie schafft ëmmer méi. (He works more and more.)

5. Word order
Ëmmer méi with its noun can fill the first place, so the verb comes next: Ëmmer méi Leit schwätze Lëtzebuergesch.

Do not confuse this with ëmmer on its own, which means always, or with nach ëmmer, which means still.

Examples (6)

  1. Et gëtt ëmmer méi deier.

It is getting more and more expensive.

  2. Ëmmer méi Leit schwätze Lëtzebuergesch.

More and more people speak Luxembourgish.

Ëmmer méi Leit is the first element, so the verb follows.

  3. D'Deeg ginn ëmmer méi laang.

The days are getting longer and longer.

  4. Däi Lëtzebuergesch gëtt ëmmer besser!

Your Luxembourgish is getting better and better!

Besser is already a comparative, so there is no méi.

  5. Ech hunn ëmmer manner Zäit.

I have less and less time.

  6. Hie schafft ëmmer méi.

    He works more and more.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding méi to a one-word comparative.

Däi Lëtzebuergesch gëtt ëmmer méi besser!
    Däi Lëtzebuergesch gëtt ëmmer besser!

Besser already means better, so méi would make a double comparative.

  • Dropping the n of hunn before ëmmer.

    Ech hu ëmmer manner Zäit.
    Ech hunn ëmmer manner Zäit.

Ëmmer starts with a vowel, so by the n-rule hunn keeps its n.
