Negation with Net

Level 1

Net means not. In a short sentence it often comes last: Ech verstinn net (I do not understand).

How It Works

Net after these words

  • The conjugated verb: Ech verstinn net.
  • An object with the, a name or a pronoun: Ech fannen de Schlëssel net. Ech kennen hien net.
  • Most time words: Ech schaffen haut net.

Net before these words

  • An adjective or adverb: Dat ass net gutt. Hatt schwätzt net séier.
  • A place or direction: Hie wunnt net hei. Mir ginn net an d'Stad.
  • An infinitive or participle at the end: Mir kënnen haut net kommen. (modal verb and infinitive)

Contrast. Net can also stand right before the word you want to contrast, usually followed by mee: Net ech, mee hien. See where net goes.

Net or keen? A noun with en, eng or no article is negated with keen or keng instead: Ech hu keen Auto. See net or keen.

Net is not nee. Nee is the answer word no. Inside a sentence, use net: Nee, ech verstinn net. Net also works in short replies: Firwat net? (Why not?)
