Months and Seasons

Level 2

To say in a month or season, use am: am Mäerz, am Summer, am Fréijoer.

How It Works

The months. Januar, Februar, Mäerz, Abrëll, Mee, Juni, Juli, August, September, Oktober, November, Dezember. Watch the spelling of Mäerz, Abrëll and Mee.

The seasons. d'Fréijoer (spring), de Summer (summer), den Hierscht (autumn), de Wanter (winter).

Gender. The months and Summer, Hierscht and Wanter are masculine: den August, den Dezember, en haarde Wanter (a hard winter). Fréijoer is neuter, like d'Joer: dëst Fréijoer (this spring). See noun gender.

In a month or season: am. Use am, the short form of an dem: am Abrëll, am Summer, am Fréijoer. It works for masculine and neuter nouns alike. See time expressions.

Other time phrases.

  • vun Oktober bis Abrëll (from October to April), with no article
  • Enn Juli (at the end of July), with no article
  • dëse Summer (this summer), dëst Fréijoer (this spring)

Dates. For a day of the month, use an ordinal number with den: den éischte Mee, den zwanzegsten Oktober. See ordinal numbers.

Like all nouns, months and seasons are capitalized, and so are the days of the week: am Mäerz, e Méindeg.

  2. Am Wanter gëtt et fréi däischter.

In winter it gets dark early.

  3. Am Fréijoer kréien d'Beem nei Blieder.

In autumn the leaves fall from the trees.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an without the article.

    Ech hunn an August Gebuertsdag.
    Ech hunn am August Gebuertsdag.

In a month or season is am, which is an with the article dem.

  • Treating Fréijoer as masculine.

    Dëse Fréijoer war ganz naass.
    Dëst Fréijoer war ganz naass.

Fréijoer is neuter, like Joer, so this spring is dëst Fréijoer.

  • Writing months in small letters.

    Mir fueren am juli fort.
    Mir fueren am Juli fort.

Months and seasons are nouns, so they are capitalized.
