Conditional: -čiau, -tum, -tų

The Conditional Mood

Level 4

dirbti → dirbčiau, dirbtum, dirbtų, dirbtume, dirbtumėte, dirbtų = I, you, he... would work.

How It Works

The endings. Drop -ti and add:

  • aš -čiau: dirbčiau, važiuočiau, būčiau
  • tu -tum: dirbtum, važiuotum, būtum
  • jis, ji -tų: dirbtų, važiuotų, būtų
  • mes -tume or -tumėme: dirbtume, važiuotume, būtume
  • jūs -tumėte: dirbtumėte, važiuotumėte, būtumėte
  • jie, jos -tų: dirbtų, važiuotų, būtų
The longer -tumei for tu is also correct, but rare. It shows up in reflexive verbs: mokytumeisi.

Always the infinitive stem. Present stems that change do not matter here: pirkti, perka → pirkčiau; rasti, randa → rasčiau; eiti, eina → eičiau. Unprefixed reflexive verbs place -si after the ending: mokyčiausi, mokytųsi.

What it is used for.

  • Imagined situations, often with jei: Ką tu darytum mano vietoje? (What would you do in my place?)
  • Polite wishes and requests: Norėčiau kavos. Ar galėtumėte padėti?
  • Advice: Patarčiau pasiimti skėtį. Reikėtų pailsėti.
  • Purpose after kad: Kalbu lėtai, kad suprastum.

For the past. "Would have done" uses būčiau with a participle: būčiau važiavęs.

  2. Ar važiuotum su mumis prie jūros?

Would you go to the seaside with us?

  3. Būtų gerai pailsėti.

It would be good to rest.

  4. Mes norėtume užsisakyti staliuką.

We would like to book a table.

  5. Ką tu darytum mano vietoje?

What would you do in my place?

  6. Patarčiau jums pasiimti skėtį.

I would advise you to take an umbrella.

Common Mistakes

  • Building the conditional from the present stem.

    Aš mielai perkčiau šį namą.
    Aš mielai pirkčiau šį namą.

The conditional comes from the infinitive pirk-ti, not the present perka. So it is pirkčiau.

  • Using the third person -tų for "I".

    Aš važiuotų su jumis.
    Aš važiuočiau su jumis.

For aš, use the first-person ending -čiau: važiuočiau. The third-person -tų is shared by singular and plural.

  • Using the aš form for "we".

    Mes norėčiau užsisakyti staliuką.
    Mes norėtume užsisakyti staliuką.

For mes the ending is -tume (or -tumėme): norėtume.
