lyg ir

Sort of with Lyg Ir

Level 5

Lyg ir makes a statement less certain. Supratau means I understood, and Lyg ir supratau means I sort of understood or I think I understood.

How It Works

What it does
Lyg ir is a hedge. It tells the listener that you believe something but are not completely sure, or that you are putting it gently:

  • Lauke lyg ir nustojo lyti. (It seems to have stopped raining outside.)
  • Čia lyg ir viskas. (I think that is everything.)
  • Tas vardas man lyg ir girdėtas. (That name sounds sort of familiar.)

With the conditional it softens advice or a plan: Lyg ir reikėtų paskambinti mamai. (I probably ought to call Mom.) See Should With Reikėtų.

Lyg ir, lyg and tarsi
On its own, lyg usually compares: Jis kalba lyg vaikas. (He talks like a child.) Before a conditional clause, lyg and tarsi mean as if; see As If With Lyg and Tarsi. Lyg ir often softens a claim. Plain lyg can also express an impression or uncertainty; it is not simply an informal shortening.

Similar hedges
Atrodo (it seems) and rodos say the same thing as a separate word; see Seeming With Atrodyti. Turbūt and tikriausiai (probably) express probability; the strength of each expression depends on context.

Examples (6)

  1. Lyg ir supratau.

    I sort of understood.

Word by Word: As-if also I-understood.

  2. Jis lyg ir sutiko.

    He seems to have agreed.

Word by Word: He as-if also agreed.

  3. Lauke lyg ir nustojo lyti.

It seems to have stopped raining outside.

Word by Word: Outside as-if also stopped to-rain.

  4. Čia lyg ir viskas.

    I think that is everything.

Word by Word: Here as-if also everything.

A common way to close a list or a meeting politely.

  5. Tas vardas man lyg ir girdėtas.

That name sounds sort of familiar to me.

Word by Word: That name to-me as-if also heard.

  6. Lyg ir reikėtų paskambinti mamai.

I probably ought to call Mom.

    Word by Word: As-if also it-would-be-needed to-call to-mom.

Common Mistakes

  • Reversing the order to ir lyg.

    Ir lyg supratau.
    Lyg ir supratau.

The hedge is always lyg ir. Ir lyg reads as "and as if" and does not mean sort of.
